India Gears Up for Major Global Conference on Elections

The Election Commission of India (ECI) convened a significant conference for Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) today at IIIDEM, New Delhi. This gathering precedes the upcoming India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM), scheduled from January 21 to January 23, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
During the conference, Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar, accompanied by Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, addressed the CEOs, shedding light on the intricacies of IICDEM 2026 and clarifying their respective roles in the event. Following the addresses, the conference provided a platform for the CEOs to engage in discussions centering on 36 thematic groups that will be led by them at IICDEM 2026. These themes cover every aspect of election management, aimed at fostering a robust body of knowledge drawn from diverse experiences of Election Management Bodies (EMBs).
A Landmark Event in Election Management
IICDEM 2026 is poised to be the largest global conference in the realm of election management ever hosted by India. The event expects to draw nearly 100 international delegates from Election Management Bodies around the world. In addition, representatives from international organizations, foreign missions based in India, as well as academic and electoral practitioners, are set to attend.
Exploring Electoral Themes and Innovations
The conference program is set to include a variety of general and plenary sessions, featuring an Inaugural Session, an EMB Leaders’ Plenary, and EMB Working Group Meetings. A notable highlight will be the launch of ECINET, accompanied by thematic sessions dedicated to global electoral themes, international electoral standards, and innovative practices in electoral processes.
Moreover, IICDEM 2026 is expected to welcome contributions from prominent academic institutions. In attendance will be four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), twelve National Law Universities (NLUs), and the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC). CEOs from states and union territories will lead the 36 thematic groups, collaborating with national and international academic experts to enhance discussions and insights during the conference.
