India Exports First GI-Tagged Dalle Chilly

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has marked a significant milestone by exporting the first consignment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Dalle Chilly from Sikkim to the Solomon Islands. This achievement not only highlights Indiaโ€™s growing role in the global organic agricultural market but also showcases the rising international demand for premium products from the North Eastern region. The Dalle Chilly, known for its unique flavor and nutritional benefits, is set to enhance Sikkimโ€™s reputation on the global spice map.

Significance of Dalle Chilly

Dalle Chilly, also referred to as Fire Ball Chilly or Dalle Khursani, is celebrated for its intense heat and vibrant red color. This chili variety is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as potassium, making it a valuable ingredient in both culinary and medicinal applications. With a Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) rating between 100,000 and 350,000, it is highly sought after by chefs and health enthusiasts alike. The recent export to the Solomon Islands underscores the growing recognition of this unique spice on the international stage.

Supporting Local Farmers

Mevedir, an agri-export enterprise, played a crucial role in sourcing approximately 15,000 kg of fresh Dalle Chilly from farmers and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in South Sikkim, particularly from the Tinkitam and Tarku regions. This initiative ensured that farmers received a premium price of Rs 250-300 per kg, significantly higher than the usual Rs 180-200 per kg. This price increase not only benefits the farmers economically but also reinforces the advantages of GI tagging and international trade for local agricultural communities.

Processing and Export Logistics

The processing of the Dalle Chilly consignment took place at an APEDA-funded Integrated Pack House, developed by the Department of Horticulture in Sikkim. Out of the total quantity, 9,000 kg was dehydrated, while 6,000 kg was preserved for further processing and export. The drying process achieved a recovery rate of 12.5%, converting 1,600 kg of fresh chilies into 200 kg of dried chilies ready for international markets. This meticulous processing ensures that the quality of the product meets global standards, further enhancing its marketability.

Future Prospects for Sikkimโ€™s Agriculture

The successful export of Dalle Chilly is expected to open new avenues for international trade, positioning Sikkim as a key player in the global spice industry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the importance of the North East in Indiaโ€™s vision for a sustainable future, highlighting the transformative potential of GI tags for farmers and artisans. The Government of India, through initiatives like the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER), continues to promote organic farming, enhancing the production and quality of Dalle Chilly. This export marks a significant step toward increasing global recognition of Indiaโ€™s organic agricultural products and expanding its agri-exports.
