India Experiences Significant PNG Transition as Government Encourages Shift from LPG to Piped Natural Gas

India is experiencing a significant transformation in household cooking fuel preferences, with piped natural gas (PNG) rapidly gaining popularity. Recent reports indicate that the adoption of PNG has surged, driven by increased convenience and stable supply. Key industry leaders, including Anil Kumar Jain, chairperson of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), and Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, managing director of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), have highlighted record growth in PNG connections, which have reached unprecedented levels in urban and semi-urban areas.

Shift from LPG to Piped Natural Gas

The shift in consumer preferences from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to piped natural gas is becoming increasingly evident. Anil Kumar Jain noted that households are beginning to recognize the advantages of piped gas systems over traditional LPG. “People earlier believed LPG was better and reliably available, but now they are realizing that piped natural gas is even better,” he stated. This change reflects a broader shift in consumer behavior regarding essential utilities, with many now viewing cooking fuel as a service similar to water and electricity. Jain emphasized that this growing confidence in PNG is reshaping how households approach their energy needs. Kamal Kishore Chatiwal echoed these sentiments, describing PNG as a safe and reliable option for households.

Government’s Push and Stable Fuel Supply

Officials have confirmed that there is currently no shortage of LPG, PNG, compressed natural gas (CNG), petrol, or diesel in India, with supply systems remaining stable. Jain explained that the government is promoting PNG alongside LPG as part of a medium-term vision. He noted that a nationwide campaign launched from January 1 to March 31, 2026, aims to increase PNG penetration, which has gained momentum following recent geopolitical developments. The government has set ambitious targets for PNG expansion, directing state governments and companies to accelerate the rollout. Chatiwal emphasized that the government’s prioritization of supply ensures household security, alleviating concerns about availability.

Strong Domestic Production and Safety Assurance

Chatiwal highlighted that household PNG consumption represents a small fraction of total gas production, ensuring long-term security for the supply. Currently, approximately 3.8 million cubic meters of gas are used daily for household purposes, while domestic production stands at around 100 million standard cubic meters per day. This means that only about 3-4% of the gas produced is utilized for PNG, indicating a robust supply chain. Additionally, officials pointed out that there is significant unused capacity within the existing network, with around 6 million connections already established but not actively using gas. This presents an immediate opportunity for expansion, with Chatiwal expressing optimism that the number of active connections could double within the next year.

Consumer Schemes to Boost Adoption

To facilitate wider adoption of PNG, companies have introduced various affordability schemes and flexible payment options. Chatiwal mentioned initiatives such as a “one rupee per day” scheme and incentives for those who pay 6,000 rupees upfront, including free gas credits. These options aim to make the transition to PNG more accessible for consumers. He encouraged households currently using both LPG and PNG to fully switch to piped gas, citing the stability and availability of supply. Chatiwal urged consumers to surrender their LPG connections, assuring them that the supply of PNG is reliable and sufficient to meet their needs.
