India Experiences 20-25% Sales Surge During Black Friday-Cyber Monday as Brands Launch Promotions Early

Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales in India are witnessing a remarkable surge this year, with retailers reporting a 20-25% increase in sales compared to last year. The excitement began early, as brands launched promotions a week ahead of Black Friday and plan to extend these offers beyond Cyber Monday. Major platforms like Tata CLiQ, Nykaa, Flipkart, Croma, and Samsung have all introduced enticing early deals, reflecting a robust consumer demand that persists even after the Diwali shopping season.

Strong Sales Momentum

Retailers across India are experiencing a significant boost in sales during the Black Friday to Cyber Monday period. Nilesh Gupta, director of Vijay Sales, noted that sales have risen by 20-25% compared to last year’s figures. However, he pointed out that Black Friday has yet to achieve the same level of prominence as major Indian sales events like Republic Day or Independence Day, where sales can spike two to three times compared to regular days. Gupta indicated that while Black Friday sales show a 50% increase over typical days, it may take another two to three years for this event to become a major shopping occasion in India.

The influence of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which originated in the United States, is expanding beyond electronics and beauty products in India. Retailers believe that this week-long event is crucial for maintaining the strong sales momentum observed during the Navratri festival and following recent GST cuts.

Shifts in Consumer Behavior

The evolving nature of consumer behavior is evident as shoppers are increasingly making planned purchases, particularly for premium products. Nishank Joshi, chief marketing officer at Nexus Select Malls, remarked that what started as a one-day flash sale has now transformed into a full shopping week for many brands. This change not only reflects consumer enthusiasm but also signifies the maturation of India’s retail landscape. Tanu Prasad, CEO of malls at Oberoi Realty, highlighted a noticeable trend towards family-oriented outings and a greater focus on premium categories such as fashion, accessories, luggage, and household goods.

Tanisha Jatia, founder and brand lead at Urban Jungle, reported that their sales have tripled compared to a regular week, showcasing the significant impact of Black Friday. However, the high demand on e-commerce platforms has led to temporary stockouts in certain categories. Avneet Singh Marwah, CEO of Super Plastronics, noted that large-screen TV sales have increased by 20% over last year, aided by a reduction in GST from 28% to 18%.

Retail Strategies to Capture Demand

To capitalize on the heightened consumer interest, retailers are extending store hours and implementing special events. Croma, for instance, organized late-night shopping sessions featuring additional deals at select locations. Bhartiya Mall in Bengaluru has also introduced Black Friday offers that encompass a wide range of products, including fashion, beauty, accessories, and even food chains like McDonald’s and Taco Bell.

With the Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions now spanning nearly a week, retailers are optimistic about sustaining strong sales through the conclusion of the event. The strategic adjustments made by retailers reflect their commitment to meeting consumer demand and enhancing the shopping experience during this busy sales period.
