India-EU Join Forces to Boost Electric Vehicle Charging Technologies
The 2nd India-EU Workshop on Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Technologies took place from March 15 to 17, 2026, at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy. This event was facilitated by the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) Working Group on Green and Clean Energy Technologies. It saw collaboration from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (OPSA) to the Government of India, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), the JRC, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), and the EU Delegation to India.
As part of their ongoing effort to strengthen strategic ties, India and the European Union (EU) are working closely on advancing green and clean energy technologies. These initiatives are crucial in paving the way for sustainable mobility, robust innovation ecosystems, and partnerships prepared for future industrial needs.
Experts Collaborate on EV Charging Solutions
The workshop gathered a diverse assembly of policymakers, technical specialists, standard-setting organizations, research institutions, and industry leaders from India and Europe. Their discussions focused on developing harmonized, interoperable, and advanced EV charging ecosystems. Sessions covered updates on policies and standards, industry perspectives, technical insights on megawatt charging systems, vehicle-to-grid integration, bidirectional charging, and wireless power transfer. Participants also enjoyed laboratory tours of the JRC’s EV and smart grid testing facilities, gaining firsthand insight into how cutting-edge technology is being developed.
Key Remarks Highlight Collaborative Efforts
Dr. Rakesh Kaur, Adviser and Scientist at OPSA, emphasized the significance of India-EU cooperation in establishing trusted and interoperable charging systems for cleaner mobility. Ms. Nienke Buisman, Head of Unit International Cooperation at DG RTD, along with Dr. Christian Thiel, Head of Unit at JRC, echoed this sentiment, reinforcing the need for deeper collaboration in research, innovation, standards, and testing.
A Comprehensive Exploration of EV Technology
The workshop’s agenda covered strategic and technical themes, including the latest research, standards, and legislative advancements in both regions. Discussions ranged from new charging infrastructure needs to communication protocols like the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP). Participants explored the progress of Megawatt Charging Systems for heavy-duty vehicles, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) integration, and international standards implementation. They also reviewed the newly released ISO 15118-21 conformance test plan.
A highlight of the event was a tour of the European Interoperability Centre for EVs and Smart Grids, featuring specialized laboratories that support data-driven, pre-normative research and reliable testing for EV charging and smart grid integration.
Future Vision for Clean Mobility Ecosystems
The workshop concluded with a summary session led by Dr. Kaur and Ms. Buisman, alongside Dr. Reji Mathai from ARAI, Dr. Liliana Pasecinic, and Dr. Harald Scholz from JRC. They reaffirmed the collective commitment of India and the EU to intensify technical cooperation, knowledge sharing, and stakeholder engagement. This cooperation is vital for achieving harmonized EV charging standards and sustainable mobility solutions, focusing on building a global clean mobility ecosystem that is secure, resilient, and interoperable.
Key contributions to the workshop also came from experts such as Dr. Hafsa Ahmad from OPSA, Mr. Abhijit Mulay from ARAI, representatives from the Bureau of Indian Standards, and industry leaders from major organizations including Tata Motors, Fraunhofer Society, and others, further reflecting the collaborative spirit of the event.
