India-EU FTA Negotiations Gain Momentum with Minister’s Brussels Visit
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, has successfully wrapped up a pivotal two-day visit to Brussels from January 8 to 9, 2026, aimed at advancing the India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. This visit is seen as a critical move towards resolving outstanding issues and expediting the finalization of the agreement.
The discussions took place amid a week of rigorous diplomatic and technical engagements in Brussels, demonstrating the committed efforts of both India and the EU to forge a comprehensive trade deal. Prior to Goyal’s visit, high-level talks were held between Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal and the EU’s Director-General for Trade, Ms. Sabine Weyand, on January 6 and 7, 2026. These meetings were crucial in assessing the progress made across various negotiation tracks and aimed at narrowing any existing gaps between the two parties.
During his meetings with Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Mr. Maroš Šefčovič, Shri Goyal engaged in substantial deliberations on essential aspects of the prospective agreement. Notable progress was acknowledged in several areas, including market access for goods, rules of origin, and services. The ministerial discussions underscored the political commitment on both sides to tackle pending issues collaboratively. Both Goyal and Šefčovič reiterated the strategic importance of finalizing a fair, balanced, and ambitious trade pact that reflects their mutual values and economic goals within a rules-based trading system.
As the visit concluded, both parties expressed renewed confidence and determination to work towards an early conclusion of a modern and mutually beneficial agreement. This commitment reflects the ongoing efforts by India and the EU to strengthen trade ties and foster economic collaboration, with hopes of reaching a significant milestone in their partnership.
