India-EU Free Trade Agreement: Potential Impact on Liquor Brands Pricing

Imported European wines, whiskies, and beers are poised to become significantly more affordable in India following the recent conclusion of a landmark free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union. This deal, hailed as the “mother of all deals” by leaders from both sides, will see substantial reductions in import duties on alcoholic beverages, paving the way for lower retail prices and greater access to premium European brands. The agreement, finalized after nearly 18 years of negotiations, promises to reshape trade dynamics between India and the EU.

Details of the Free Trade Agreement

The FTA, which was officially concluded on Tuesday, encompasses trade in goods and services, featuring tariff reductions or eliminations on nearly 97 percent of EU exports to India. This is expected to yield annual duty savings of up to €4 billion for the European Union. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that this agreement would unlock new opportunities for India’s vast population of 1.4 billion and millions across Europe. He noted that the deal represents nearly a quarter of global GDP and about one-third of world trade. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed these sentiments, stating that the FTA would merge “Indian skills and scale with Europe’s technology, capital, and innovation,” ultimately fostering growth that neither side could achieve independently.

Impact on Alcoholic Beverages

The agreement will lead to a significant reduction in import duties on various alcoholic beverages. Currently, wine duties can reach as high as 150 percent, but under the new terms, tariffs on premium European wines will drop to 20 percent, while medium-range wines will incur duties of 30 percent. However, wines priced below €2.5 will not benefit from these concessions. Additionally, tariffs on spirits, including whisky, vodka, rum, and gin, will be reduced from 150 percent to 40 percent. Beer duties will also see a decrease from 110 percent to 50 percent, making European beer brands more accessible, especially in metropolitan areas and tourist hotspots. This reduction is expected to particularly benefit wines from countries like France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, as well as Scotch and Irish whiskies, craft gins, and various continental beer brands.

Benefits for India

India stands to gain significantly from this agreement, particularly in its labor-intensive sectors such as textiles, apparel, leather, gems and jewelry, handicrafts, and footwear. The EU has agreed to eliminate duties on Indian wines, creating new export opportunities for Indian producers targeting the growing diaspora market. Furthermore, India has secured quota-based duty reductions on table grapes, allowing for duty-free access for 85,000 tonnes, while exports exceeding this quota can continue under existing Most Favored Nation (MFN) rates. This strategic move aligns with India’s broader goals in its trade agreements, ensuring that key sectors receive the necessary support.

Trade Dynamics and Future Prospects

India’s bilateral trade with the EU reached $136.53 billion in the fiscal year 2024-25, with exports totaling $75.85 billion and imports at $60.68 billion, making the EU India’s largest trading partner in goods. The services trade also flourished, amounting to $83.10 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $15.17 billion for India. During the joint announcement of the FTA, von der Leyen commended India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal for his pivotal role in finalizing the deal. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic referred to the agreement as “the biggest FTA ever,” highlighting the reduction of high tariffs and the unleashing of new opportunities as a testament to the potential of genuine partnerships in trade.
