India Enhances Quantum Research with New Facilities

In a significant stride forward, India is bolstering its quantum technology capabilities with the establishment of advanced Quantum Fabrication and Central Facilities at premier institutions like IIT Bombay and IISc Bengaluru. This initiative, part of the National Quantum Mission, aims to drive the indigenous development of quantum computing chips and sensors, positioning the country at the forefront of quantum innovations.

The new facilities consist of not only major state-of-the-art centers but also additional smaller-scale ones located at IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur. Each facility focuses on different aspects of quantum technology, ensuring a comprehensive approach to research and development in this cutting-edge field.

Key Facilities and Their Objectives

The IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur centers are dedicated to advancing quantum sensing and metrology. Their primary goal is to foster breakthroughs in quantum sensing by facilitating the creation of sophisticated sensor platforms that can cater to both societal needs and strategic applications. These advancements are expected to have wide-ranging implications, enhancing capabilities in various sectors.

Meanwhile, the IISc Bengaluru setup is pivotal for fabricating quantum computing chips employing superconducting, photonic, and spin qubit technologies. These chips are essential for constructing scalable quantum architectures, laying a foundational stone for future quantum computing systems.

Additionally, the Quantum Materials & Devices fabrication facility at IIT Delhi focuses on the indigenous development of quantum materials and digital fabrication techniques. This facility plays a crucial role in scaling up different quantum technologies, which is vital for the country’s aspirations in this domain.

Massive Investment and Timelines

The establishment of these state-of-the-art facilities is backed by a substantial investment of Rs. 720 crore. The initiative is currently being implemented in phases under the National Quantum Mission, following the official project approvals. Each institution has commenced the purchasing, setup, and launch of specialized cleanrooms, cryogenic systems, and advanced fabrication equipment sourced from various national and international suppliers.

Current assessments suggest that the timeline for completing these projects across the centers is projected to be around 2028. With these initiatives, India aims to develop world-class quantum fabrication and device development capabilities within the country. This will create a robust ecosystem for researchers and startups, enabling them to design and prototype quantum processors, sensors, and materials domestically, thus securing a competitive edge in the quantum landscape.
