India Enhances Global Tourism Appeal with Strategic Initiatives

The Indian Ministry of Tourism is intensifying efforts to promote India as a premier tourist destination in key international markets. Collaboration with Indian Missions abroad plays a vital role in this strategy, enabling the participation of both private and government stakeholders, including state governments and union territories. These efforts encompass attendance at major overseas tourism trade fairs, organization of tourism roadshows and food festivals, as well as engagements with local tour operators and other industry stakeholders.

In addition to international promotion, the Ministry is focused on strengthening domestic tourism through initiatives like Dekho Apna Desh, Bharat Parv, and the Best Tourism Village competition.

Celebrating India’s Cultural Heritage

The Dekho Apna Desh initiative aims to heighten awareness of India’s rich heritage and culture, while also fostering national pride and encouraging domestic travel. Through this initiative, the Ministry has organized webinars highlighting lesser-known destinations, along with engaging quiz contests and various competitions both online and offline. Additionally, collaborative promotional events have been held with tourism stakeholders to further encourage exploration within India’s diverse landscape.

Bharat Parv, an annual flagship event organized during Republic Day celebrations, showcases the nation’s cultural, artistic, culinary, and spiritual diversity. The theme resonates with the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,” featuring Republic Day tableaux, food festivals, handicrafts, and cultural performances, demonstrating India’s vibrant heritage.

Highlighting Sustainable Tourism

The Best Tourism Villages Competition recognizes villages that exemplify tourism excellence by preserving cultural and natural assets and promoting sustainable community-based values. Over the past two years, the competition has celebrated 71 villages as best tourism destinations, showcasing their commitment to sustainable practices.

Boosting MICE and Wedding Tourism

To position India as a leading global destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE), the Ministry has developed a comprehensive National Strategy and Roadmap for the industry. The launch of the “Meet in India” sub-brand in 2021 aims to promote India as a hub for large-scale conferences and exhibitions, enhancing the country’s global image as a MICE destination.

The Ministry also introduced the “India Says I Do” campaign in 2023, focusing on promoting India as a premier wedding destination. This campaign highlights the wide range of culturally rich and vibrant venues available for weddings across the country—from opulent palaces to serene beaches and majestic mountains.

Future Initiatives

Looking ahead, the Ministry has planned the “Wed in India” expo and “Meet in India” conclave for 2024 and 2025, which will take place alongside the Great Indian Travel Bazaar in Jaipur, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

While these promotional measures are aimed at elevating India’s tourism profile, the Ministry has yet to conduct a comprehensive assessment to evaluate their impact on tourist arrivals and overall tourism spending. Nevertheless, the Ministry remains committed to promoting India as a holistic travel destination, emphasizing diverse tourism products from coastal to rural tourism through extensive marketing campaigns with the travel trade, state governments, and Indian missions worldwide. This information was shared by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a recent Lok Sabha session.
