India Champions Solar Cooperation at Bharat Renewable Energy Summit 2026

During a press conference at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026, Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi reaffirmed India’s dedication to fostering international solar cooperation. He emphasized the shared benefits of solar advancements aimed at enhancing global accessibility, underscoring India’s pivotal role as the President of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for the third consecutive term under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Shri Joshi highlighted India’s unyielding commitment to the vision of _Power To Empower_ and the principle of _One Sun, One World, One Grid_. This commitment has not only solidified India’s position on the global stage but also helped forge significant partnerships, particularly with France, in establishing the ISA in 2015. With 130 signatory and member countries, the ISA has now evolved into a vital platform for cooperation, especially among nations in the Global South.

Highlighting Future Priorities and Investments

The Summit, inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi on November 2, 2026, will run until November 5. The discussions held over both past and upcoming days are centered around transitioning from solar commitments to actual investments, and from theoretical partnerships to tangible projects that deliver measurable impacts.

Minister Joshi emphasized that financing is crucial for effective solar deployment. The introduction of the USD 200 million Africa Solar Facility marks a significant move towards unlocking investment in Africa’s renewable energy sector. Additionally, India’s allocation of approximately ₹225 crore (USD 25 million) further reiterates its commitment to making affordable solar energy available to underserved communities. Furthermore, the USD 300 million Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy Fund sets a precedent for scaling these models continent-wide.

Transforming Lives with Solar Energy

Shri Joshi remarked on the transformative potential of solar energy in improving livelihoods, citing ISA-supported initiatives in countries such as Fiji, Madagascar, Comoros, and Seychelles. These initiatives have successfully powered healthcare facilities and schools, facilitated access to clean drinking water, and enhanced agricultural cold storage capabilities. The alliance is also working on developing solar and storage solutions tailored to the needs of Small Island Developing States, starting with Mauritius.

The Union Minister also spotlighted initiatives aimed at empowering 3 million farmers through solar energy, pointing out the PM-KUSUM initiative’s effectiveness in reducing irrigation costs while creating opportunities for additional income. He stated that the ISA was actively working to adapt this successful model across its member countries, especially in Africa, with a focus on farmer engagement in the energy transition.

Building National Capabilities and Future Endeavors

To bolster national capabilities, Shri Joshi mentioned the establishment of 17 Solar Technology Application Resource Centres, the Global Capability Centre–SHINE, and the AI-enabled ISA Academy. The aim is to strengthen institutions, develop skills, and harness new technologies to expedite solar deployment.

As the face of technology evolves, with artificial intelligence transforming economies, the Minister asserted that access to affordable, reliable, and clean electricity will serve as a strategic priority moving forward. He expressed gratitude towards all member countries for their trust and collaboration, reinforcing India’s commitment to mobilizing investment and facilitating solar energy deployment as it embarks on its new term as ISA President.
