Inauguration of Navkar Mahamantra Divas
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the Navkar Mahamantra Divas, emphasizing the importance of the Navkar Mantra in Jainism. He described it as more than just a mantra; it embodies the essence of life and faith. The Navkar Mantra serves as a source of energy and stability, reflecting the core values of Jain philosophy. Modi shared his personal connection to Jainism, recalling how Jain Acharyas influenced his understanding from a young age. He stressed that Jainism is not merely a historical relic but a living tradition that remains relevant in contemporary India. The Prime Minister pointed out that the teachings of Lord Mahavir are integral to India’s cultural and architectural landscape. He noted the representation of Sammed Shikhar at the new Parliament’s entrance and the return of ancient Tirthankara idols from abroad as symbols of India’s spiritual continuity. Addressing Climate Change Through Jain Principles
During his address, Prime Minister Modi identified climate change as one of the most pressing challenges of our time. He advocated for a sustainable lifestyle, a principle that the Jain community has embraced for centuries. The teachings of Lord Mahavir align seamlessly with the national Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), which promotes sustainable living practices. The Jain philosophy, encapsulated in the phrase “Parasparopagraho Jivanam,” emphasizes the interdependence of all life, offering a profound ecological perspective that can guide efforts toward environmental sustainability.
Nine Resolutions for a Sustainable Future
In a symbolic gesture, Prime Minister Modi proposed nine resolutions inspired by the Navkar Mantra. Each resolution represents a commitment to knowledge, action, harmony, and progress. He explained that the repetition of the mantra, whether nine times or in multiples like 27, 54, or 108, signifies spiritual completeness and intellectual clarity. These resolutions are designed to align with Jain principles and contribute to a sustainable and harmonious future.
Additionally, the government is taking steps to preserve Jain heritage through initiatives like granting classical status to Prakrit and Pali languages and digitizing Jain manuscripts under the Gyan Bharatam Mission. A significant project approved by the Ministry of Minority Affairs will establish a ‘Centre for Jain Studies’ at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya in Indore, with a budget of ₹25 crore. This center aims to promote Jain heritage, facilitate research, and enhance global understanding of Jainism.
Commemorating Mahavir Jayanti in 2024
Looking ahead, Mahavir Jayanti in April 2024 will feature the release of a commemorative stamp and coin celebrating the 2550th Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvan Mahotsav. As India progresses toward becoming a developed nation, the teachings of Lord Mahavir—centered on inner conquest, compassion, and truth—continue to serve as a guiding light.
