India Celebrates AI Innovation for Gender Empowerment at Summit

The India AI Impact Summit 2026, held from February 16 to 20, marked a landmark moment for gender equality as it unveiled the Casebook on AI and Gender Empowerment. Launched on February 17, this publication embodies India’s commitment to fostering inclusive and ethical developments in artificial intelligence.

Produced through the IndiaAI Mission by the Government of India, in collaboration with UN Women and under the auspices of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD), the casebook showcases 23 innovative AI solutions from the Global South. Each solution exemplifies measurable impacts on advancing gender equality and empowering women.

Celebrated Launch Featuring International Dignitaries

The casebook’s launch was co-hosted by notable figures, including Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary at MeitY; Shri Anil Malik, Secretary at MoWCD; and Ms. Christine Arab, Regional Director for UN Women in Asia and the Pacific. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres further elevated the casebook’s profile during his visit to the JanAI Expo on February 20, where he interacted with young women engaged in STEM careers through UN Women’s WeSTEM initiative.

During this visit, young women from rural communities shared their experiences of utilizing AI to enhance their skills, access learning opportunities, and envision new career paths in technology. UN Women’s Kanta Singh, serving as Country Representative a.i., presented a copy of the casebook to Secretary-General Guterres, accompanied by Under-Secretary-General Amandeep Singh Gill, the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology.

Highlighting Gender-Responsive Innovations

The casebook features a diverse range of solutions selected through a strict multi-stage evaluation process from over 233 submissions across more than 50 countries. An independent committee of experts from MeitY, MoWCD, and UN Women assessed these initiatives based on their real-world implementation and tangible outcomes regarding gender impact.

The showcased AI solutions span vital fields such as healthcare, economic empowerment, digital safety against gender-based violence, climate resilience, and education. Each solution aims to help women and girls navigate and benefit from the evolving digital landscape.

A Valuable Resource for Future Generations

As a significant resource, the casebook is designed for policymakers, technology developers, researchers, and practitioners keen on ensuring the ethical and inclusive application of AI systems. It aligns with India’s vision of advancing democratic AI practices while embedding gender-responsive principles across the Seven Chakras of the IndiaAI Mission.

Collaborative Efforts Driving Change

This initiative is a testament to effective collaboration between various governmental and international entities. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology steered the strategic direction under the IndiaAI Mission, while UN Women provided global outreach and gender expertise. The Ministry of Women and Child Development ensured that gender-sensitive evaluation standards were upheld throughout the process.
