India Boosts Warship Construction with Private Sector Partnership

India is making significant strides in indigenous warship construction, driven by an increasing collaboration between the public and private sectors. This was highlighted by Secretary of Defence Production, Shri Sanjeev Kumar, during his address at the South Zone Quality Assurance Industry Conclave 2025, held virtually on December 10, 2025. He emphasized the importance of reforms focused on Quality Assurance, including the Green Channel certification and enhanced digitalization to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and expedite the delivery of crucial defence assets.

Shri Kumar stated, “To realize the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047, we must leverage technology to streamline processes,” underscoring the necessity of minimizing friction in the supply chain for ensuring operational readiness. His remarks set the tone for the conclave, which aimed to reinforce the significance of quality in defence production.

Quality Assurance in Defence Production

During the conclave, Dr. Garima Bhagat, Joint Secretary for Land Systems in the Department of Defence Production, called for a transformative shift in how the industry approaches quality. She advocated for a move from a traditional model of inspection to a more proactive approach focused on prevention. Dr. Bhagat encouraged industry partners to forge strong public-private partnerships where quality is an integral part of the manufacturing process, rather than a final check.

Key Highlights of the Conclave

The conclave featured several key discussions aimed at enhancing coordination between the Indian Navy and industry players regarding component quality. Some highlights included:

  • Strategic Dialogue: Establishing a platform to strengthen collaboration between the Indian Navy and industry regarding component quality.
  • Tech Integration: Engaging discussions about incorporating advanced technologies to ensure combat readiness.
  • Vision Alignment: Reaffirming the central role of quality in achieving self-reliance and supporting India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Strengthening Defence Industrial Base

The conclave represented a strategic forum designed to align the defence industrial base in Southern India with the national objectives of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Maritime Vision 2047.’ Approximately 80 industry representatives from major industrial centers including Coimbatore, Chennai, and Bengaluru participated, highlighting the event’s significance in fostering a resilient ecosystem for indigenous warship construction through advanced Quality Assurance (QA) frameworks.
