India Boosts Venezuela Oil Imports to Six-Year High Amid US-Iran Conflict and Hormuz Crisis
Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict, India is poised to significantly increase its imports of crude oil from Venezuela. Recent shipping data reveals that over 12 million barrels of Venezuelan crude are expected to reach India’s western coast this month, marking the highest volume of imports from Venezuela since February 2020. This strategic move comes as India seeks to mitigate supply disruptions caused by the conflict, which has impacted oil flows through the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Significant Increase in Venezuelan Oil Imports
According to a report from Bloomberg, the shipments arriving in April were likely arranged prior to the recent disruptions in Middle Eastern oil supplies. Sumit Ritolia, Kpler’s lead research analyst, emphasized that this development reflects a long-term strategic shift for India rather than a mere reaction to current events. With approximately 90% of its crude oil needs met through imports, India has been actively seeking alternative sources in light of the conflict that has affected nearly 40% of its oil supplies, typically transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
Historically, India has been a major buyer of Venezuelan oil, particularly before US sanctions led to a decline in trade. However, recent easing of these sanctions following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro in January has opened the door for renewed imports. The current influx of Venezuelan crude is significant, as it not only helps India diversify its sources but also aligns with its long-term energy strategy.
First Shipment in a Year
The Suezmax vessel Ottoman Sincerity has successfully delivered close to 1 million barrels of Boscan crude to the Sikka port, operated by Reliance Industries Ltd. This marks the first shipment of Venezuelan oil to India in over a year. The cargo, which consists of asphaltic-grade crude, was loaded through ship-to-ship transfers near Aruba, showcasing a shift in India’s sourcing strategies.
Reliance Industries has received approval from the US to procure crude directly from Venezuela’s state-run PDVSA, allowing for a more streamlined import process. This week, the company also took delivery of another shipment aboard the Bahamas-flagged very large crude carrier Helios. This change indicates a departure from previous sourcing methods that relied on intermediaries like Vitol Group and Trafigura, enhancing the efficiency of India’s oil procurement.
Impact on Fuel Supply
The heavier grades of Venezuelan crude are particularly valuable as they yield a larger share of middle distillates, such as diesel and jet fuel. This is especially pertinent given the current tight supply in these segments. Data from Kpler suggests that a significant portion of the recent imports consists of Venezuela’s key export grade, the Merey blend. As India continues to navigate the complexities of global oil supply chains, these developments highlight the country’s proactive approach to securing its energy needs amid geopolitical uncertainties.
