India Boosts Fertilizer Supplies for Kharif 2026 Season
In response to ongoing challenges in West Asia, the Government of India has implemented a comprehensive strategy to enhance fertilizer availability ahead of the Kharif 2026 season. This initiative combines domestic production increases with an advanced global procurement strategy, ensuring that Indian farmers remain insulated from disruptions in global supply chains.
Enhanced Gas Supply Through Global Tender
Key to this enhancement is the successful bidding for natural gas conducted by the Empowered Pool Management Committee (EPMC). This strategic move resulted in an additional supply of 7.31 Million Metric Standard Cubic Meters per Day (MMSCMD) of gas on a spot basis. As a result, the total gas supply to Urea plants has surged by 23%, increasing from 32 MMSCMD to 39.31 MMSCMD.
This technical intervention is expected to yield immediate benefits, with domestic Urea production projected to rise nearly 23%, accelerating from 54,500 Metric Tons per day to 67,000 Metric Tons per day. This enhancement fulfills 76% of the gas requirements of Urea plants, up from the previous fulfillment level of 62%.
Strong Stock Levels Prepare for Sowing Season
The government’s proactive measures are underscored by robust stock levels, which are significantly higher than those recorded last year. Current Urea stocks total 61.14 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT), an increase from 55.22 LMT in March 2025. Notably, stocks of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) have more than doubled, reaching 24.24 LMT, providing a robust cushion ahead of the upcoming sowing season.
| Product (LMT) | Stock as of 19.03.2026 | Stock as of 19.03.2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Urea | 61.14 | 55.22 |
| DAP | 24.24 | 11.85 |
| NPKs | 57.21 | 34.44 |
| SSP | 24.80 | 23.15 |
| MOP | 12.65 | 14.13 |
Diplomatic Maneuvers Strengthen Preparedness
During a recent inter-ministerial press briefing, Shri Randhir Jaiswal, Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasized the government’s success in preparing for Kharif 2026. He stated, “We have adequate stocks; we are comfortable. The Department of Fertilizers has also issued global tenders well in advance, anticipating current market demands. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. We expect the majority of orders from various sources to arrive by the end of March.”
Jaiswal highlighted the government’s commitment to a diversified procurement approach and noted that ongoing diplomatic engagements with multiple supplier nations played a crucial role in securing these supplies. This proactive governance aims to ensure that India’s fertilizer requirements are met efficiently and effectively.
