India Boosts Animal Health with New Hormone Production Facility
The Government of India’s Technology Development Board (TDB) is taking a significant step toward enhancing the country’s animal health ecosystem by approving financial support for M/s Biovet Private Limited in Malur. The project, titled “Development and Commercialization of Veterinary Hormones,” is focused on establishing a dedicated facility to produce vital veterinary reproductive hormones, which are essential for managing livestock reproduction and treating reproductive disorders.
The initiative centers around the commercial production of key hormones, including GnRH analogues like Gonadorelin and Buserelin acetate, as well as the prostaglandin analogue Cloprostenol. These hormones are essential for effective livestock breeding management, contributing to sustainable animal production and enhancing breeding efficiency in the sector.
Currently, India relies heavily on imports for these reproductive hormones, leading to higher costs for farmers. The establishment of a manufacturing facility by Biovet will not only reduce this dependence but also lower production costs, ensuring greater accessibility for livestock farmers across the country. By facilitating domestic production, the project is poised to yield significant foreign exchange savings while opening up export opportunities in the global veterinary market.
Promoting Biotech Solutions in Animal Healthcare
In recent years, advancements in biotechnology have made hormone synthesis increasingly relevant in the realm of animal healthcare. The project will utilize Biovet’s strong background in biotechnology and veterinary products—including biologicals and vaccines—to expand into this new specialized area focused on hormone production and therapeutic solutions.
During the announcement, Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, emphasized the importance of developing indigenous manufacturing capacity for veterinary hormones, stating, “This is a strategic move towards strengthening animal husbandry and supporting farmers’ livelihoods. Through this project, TDB aims to facilitate import substitution, promote domestic biotechnology capabilities, and enable affordable access to critical reproductive therapeutics.”
Support from Biovet for Sustainable Growth
The promoters of Biovet Private Limited also expressed their enthusiasm regarding TDB’s support, stating, “With this backing, we can create world-class manufacturing infrastructure for veterinary hormones that will serve both domestic needs and international markets. This program will enhance the accessibility of essential reproductive treatments and contribute to the growth and sustainability of India’s livestock sector.”
This initiative aligns seamlessly with TDB’s mission to support the commercialization of indigenous technologies and industrial R&D outcomes. By backing the domestic production of critical veterinary hormones, TDB is reinforcing its commitment to Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in animal healthcare, which will help strengthen the livestock value chain and improve income and productivity for farmers nationwide.
