India and Germany Boost Postal Cooperation with Key Agreements

India and Germany have made a substantial move to enhance their bilateral partnership in the postal, express, and logistics sectors. This development occurred on January 12, 2026, during the visit of H.E. Mr. Friedrich Merz, the Federal Chancellor of Germany, to India, marking a significant milestone in international cooperation.

Key Agreements Signed

Two pivotal documents were signed during the visit. The first is a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDoI) between the Department of Posts of the Indian Ministry of Communications and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The second is a Letter of Intent (LoI) between the Department of Posts and Deutsche Post AG, Germany’s designated postal operator.

The JDoI was signed by Ms. Vandita Kaul, Secretary (Posts) for the Government of India, and Dr. Philipp Ackermann, the Ambassador of Germany to India. Meanwhile, the LoI was executed by Mr. Jitendra Gupta, Director General of Postal Services, and Mr. Tobias Meyer, CEO of Deutsche Post AG/DHL Group.

Focus on E-Commerce and Logistics

The collaboration aims to establish a structured partnership that encompasses postal and express logistics services, placing a strong emphasis on cross-border e-commerce and timely international deliveries. This initiative sets the stage for developing joint products, enhancing network connectivity, and improving last-mile cooperation. Additionally, it will explore bilateral rate arrangements for letters and parcels.

An important feature of the partnership is the exchange of best practices in areas such as digitalization, operational efficiency, and sustainability within green logistics.

Advancing International Shipping

One of the anticipated outcomes of this collaboration is the launch of joint premium international express services. This includes a time-definite international express service that will utilize India’s extensive last-mile capabilities alongside Deutsche Post’s expansive global logistics network. The integrated approach promises significant improvements in transit times, overall reliability, and end-to-end visibility for international shipments originating from India.

Supporting Indian Exports and Businesses

This initiative aligns with the Indian Government’s Vision to promote exports, particularly from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), startups, artisans, and small producers. By providing reliable and cost-effective logistics solutions, the partnership aims to enhance access to international markets, contributing to an increase in export volumes while improving service quality.

In conclusion, the signing of these agreements underlines the commitment of both India and Germany to deepen their economic ties. It promotes innovation in postal and logistics services, paving the way for sustainable growth in international trade.
