India and Fiji Strengthen Agricultural Ties in Bilateral Meeting

In a significant step towards enhancing agricultural collaboration, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, met with Fiji’s Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi today. The two leaders engaged in productive talks aimed at reinforcing and expanding ongoing cooperation in various agricultural sectors.

Building on Historic Ties

Minister Chouhan emphasized the strong historical relationship between India and Fiji, rooted in mutual respect and extensive cultural connections. The importance of agriculture and food security as essential areas for bilateral cooperation was highlighted during their discussions.

Both ministers covered a wide range of topics of mutual interest, leading to an agreement to extend their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for an additional five years. To further streamline this collaboration, the establishment of a Joint Working Group (JWG) was proposed.

Among the key areas identified for potential partnership were initiatives related to student exchanges, training, and capacity-building programs. The discussions also included technology sharing in fields such as small-scale machinery and digital agriculture tools. Efforts to strengthen research infrastructure and share knowledge on reducing food loss and waste emerged as crucial focal points for future cooperation.

A Diverse Fijian Delegation

Accompanying Minister Tunabuna were several key representatives from the Fijian government. This included Charan Jeath Singh, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry; H.E. Jagannath Sami, Fiji’s High Commissioner; Dr. Vinesh Kumar, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sugar; Nitya Reddy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fiji Sugar Corporation; and Paulo Daurewa, Counsellor at the Fiji High Commission.

On the Indian side, the delegation comprised prominent figures such as Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and Shri M. L. Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, along with other senior officials.

A Promising Future

The meeting signified not only the commitment of India and Fiji to enhance their agricultural dynamics but also underscored a shared vision for sustainable development in the agricultural domain. With agreed initiatives and planned collaborations, both nations are poised to benefit mutually, paving the way for a stronger partnership in agricultural advancement.
