India and EU Strengthen Defence Ties During High-Level Meeting

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with Kaja Kallas, the High Representative and Vice President of the European Commission, in New Delhi on January 27, 2026. The two leaders engaged in extensive discussions on various bilateral security and defence matters. During the meeting, Singh highlighted the shared values of democracy, pluralism, and the rule of law that underpin the increasingly robust partnership between India and the European Union (EU).

Singh emphasized the necessity for Indian and EU defence sectors to collaborate effectively, promoting mutual interests for global stability and sustainable growth. He noted that this partnership aligns with India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) while also complementing the EU’s strategic autonomy efforts. By integrating supply chains, they aim to create reliable defence ecosystems and capability enhancements that could become pivotal in future global challenges.

Moreover, Singh pointed out that India’s defence industry is poised to contribute significantly to the EU’s ‘ReArm initiative,’ especially at a time when the Union is looking to diversify its supplier base and reduce dependencies. The minister marked Ms. Kallas’s visit as particularly special due to its timing with India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations.

Kaja Kallas expressed her appreciation for being part of India’s Republic Day festivities, especially noting the EU’s representation in the parade at Kartavya Path. She stressed the importance of collaboration between India and the EU in the Indian Ocean Region, advocating for learning from each other’s best practices through joint military exercises.

The Defence Minister welcomed the EU’s suggestion for a Liaison Officer (LO) to be stationed at the Indian Navy’s Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram. This officer’s role is expected to bolster operational coordination between the Indian Navy and the EU, particularly in counter-piracy efforts and threat assessments in the Indian Ocean Region.
