India and EU Forge Stronger Ties in Next-Generation 6G Technologies
During a recent visit to India from February 27-28, 2025, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, alongside the EU College of Commissioners, reaffirmed the partnership between India and the European Union (EU) in advancing next-generation digital technologies, with a strong focus on 6G telecommunications. This commitment emphasizes the need for security, trust, and resilient global supply chains in future communications.
The Leaders’ Statement highlights the growing significance of advanced and emerging technologies under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC). They welcomed increased collaboration in telecommunications, digital infrastructure, and the establishment of global standards.
Collaboration on 6G Technologies
A joint effort between the Bharat 6G Alliance and the European Union’s 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G SNS IA) was acknowledged. This collaboration is aimed at synchronizing research and innovation priorities to establish secure and future-ready 6G networks. This industry-driven initiative is expected to enhance the resilience and diversity of telecom supply chains while promoting principles of openness and interoperability.
Both parties recognized the crucial role of cooperation in research and development, testing, and standardization of 6G technologies. They reiterated their mutual goal of developing globally interoperable standards that foster innovation, competitiveness, and inclusive digital growth.
India’s Ambitious 6G Vision
This strengthened partnership supports India’s national vision for 6G, which is led by the Department of Telecommunications. The vision aims to position India as a global leader in 6G technology, ensuring that the digital infrastructure is secure, affordable, and sustainable.
The joint efforts between India and the EU are set to construct a trusted global digital ecosystem that benefits citizens, industries, and the international community as a whole.
Strategic Agenda Towards 2030
In a broader strategic context, the **_Towards 2030_**_: A Joint India–EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda was endorsed recently at the 16th India-EU Summit held on January 27, 2026, in New Delhi. This agenda aims to strengthen shared experiences regarding universal, robust, and secure digital infrastructure while promoting secure telecommunications ecosystems.
The Bharat 6G Alliance, composed of domestic industries, academia, national research institutions, and standards organizations, supports India’s 6G ambitions. Meanwhile, the 6G SNS IA has also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaborative opportunities across the 6G ecosystem. This MoU establishes a cooperative framework focusing on common interests, consensus building, and developing globally harmonized standards for next-generation technologies.
At the International Bharat 6G Symposium 2025, held alongside the India Mobile Congress, prominent global alliances issued a Joint Statement called the “New Delhi Declaration,” emphasizing the importance of shaping 6G as a global public good.
