India and Canada Strengthen Energy Cooperation at Goa Summit
In a landmark move for international energy relations, India and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to fostering collaboration in the energy sector during the India Energy Week 2026 (IEW’26) held in Goa. The event saw H.E. Timothy Hodgson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, participate, marking the first high-level attendance of a Canadian Cabinet Minister at this annual gathering. During the summit, Hodgson and India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, H.E. Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, announced the launch of a renewed India-Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue, emphasizing the critical importance of energy security for both nations.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
This significant meeting follows an agreement made by the Prime Ministers of India and Canada during their discussions at the G7 Summit in June 2025. Both leaders highlighted the necessity of reinvigorating senior ministerial engagements, paving the way for the current dialogue focused on energy matters.
Recognizing the complementary nature of their energy sectors, the Ministers noted the mutual benefits of enduring partnerships. Canada aims to enhance its position as an energy superpower with a focus on both clean and conventional energy. In contrast, India, with its status as a major player in the global energy landscape, is projected to account for a significant share of the world’s energy demand growth over the next twenty years.
Opportunities for Collaboration
With Canada ramping up its liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and India increasing its crude oil consumption, there lies vast potential for cooperation in energy supplies. Both nations plan to deepen bilateral trade in LNG and LPG, alongside the reciprocal exchange of refined petroleum products.
Investments in energy projects are set to be a major focus, with Canada announcing over $116 billion for energy and resource developments through its Major Projects Office. India, on its part, is opening avenues for an estimated $500 billion in energy sector investments, inviting Canadian participation.
Climate Commitments and Innovations
Amidst these discussions, the Ministers also addressed the necessity of meeting climate-related objectives. They expressed the intent to collaboratively reduce emissions throughout conventional energy value chains and accelerate the adoption of cleaner technologies. Potential avenues for joint efforts include renewable energy ventures such as hydrogen and biofuels, as well as advancements in critical minerals and energy storage solutions.
Furthermore, Canada’s observer role in the Global Biofuels Alliance highlights ongoing collaborations aimed at promoting sustainable energy practices worldwide.
