India and Canada Forge Partnership in Food Sciences

The National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management-Kundli (NIFTEM-K), recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India, has entered into a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Saskatchewan (USask) in Saskatoon, Canada. This collaboration is set to enhance academic and research initiatives within the field of food sciences, marking a notable development in the agri-food sector for both nations.

The formal signing of the MoU took place between Dr. Harinder Singh Oberoi, Director of NIFTEM-K, and Dr. Baljit Singh, Vice President (Research) at USask. The event was attended by distinguished figures including Mr. Scott Moe, the Premier of Saskatchewan, and key officials from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), underscoring the partnership’s strategic importance.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

This agreement comes on the heels of an announcement regarding the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Pulse Protein, a joint initiative highlighted by Prime Ministers from both countries. NIFTEM-K will lead this project on the Indian front, collaborating closely with USask.

The five-year agreement between the two institutions aims to develop innovative online teaching and training programs centered on food science and technology, alongside food systems economics and business development. In addition, the MoU will facilitate short-term exchange initiatives for faculty, researchers, and students, fostering international collaboration and the sharing of best practices in food processing.

Collaborative Efforts and Innovations

This partnership outlines a comprehensive approach to cooperation that includes joint research projects, collaborative funding proposals, and the formation of integrated degree programs in Food Processing Technology. By leveraging USask’s robust agrifood ecosystem and global research capabilities, alongside NIFTEM-K’s role as a “One Stop Solution Provider” for India’s food processing sector, the collaboration is positioned to create significant advancements in the industry.

Key areas of joint activity will encompass organizing seminars, workshops, and promoting short-term academic exchanges. The institutions plan to develop industry-oriented short courses and collaboratively strategize projects that will yield tangible outcomes.

Commitment to Sustainable Food Systems

Leaders from both institutions emphasized that this partnership will spur innovation and build capacity, delivering technology-driven solutions aimed at fostering sustainable food systems. By merging their expertise within two vibrant agri-food ecosystems, the collaboration aims to enhance food security, improve food processing value chains, and drive research-led industrial growth in India and Canada.

This MoU signifies an important step for NIFTEM-K in broadening its international presence and reinforcing India’s position as a leader in food technology and entrepreneurship, paving the way for impactful global partnerships.
