India and Austria Strengthen Economic Ties at Joint Commission Meeting

The 17th Session of the India–Austria Joint Economic Commission (IAJEC) took place in New Delhi, where key discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral economic ties were held. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, stressed the significance of this collaboration, highlighting India’s dedication to developing strong economic partnerships that yield tangible benefits in trade, investment, and innovation.

Strategic Dialogue between Nations

The IAJEC meeting was co-chaired by Shri Saket Kumar, Joint Secretary of the Department of Commerce from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Mr. Florian Frauscher, Director General of the Federal Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism from Austria. This pivotal gathering served as a platform to assess the current state of bilateral economic relations while also aiming to enhance cooperation in essential sectors.

Exploring New Avenues for Cooperation

Extensive discussions were held on the status of trade and investment relations, with both nations eager to identify new areas of collaboration across a diverse range of sectors. These sectors include infrastructure—specifically in automotive, railways, and road transport—along with scientific research, innovation, dual vocational training, and skills development. The meeting also touched on recognizing vocational qualifications, fostering startups through the Global Innovation Network, promoting AYUSH and wellness, tourism, and exploring advancements in semiconductors, critical minerals, digitalization, and artificial intelligence, as well as film funding.

A Positive Outlook for Future Trade Relations

Both parties expressed satisfaction with the conclusion of negotiations for the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking a significant step in promoting trade between India and Europe. The IAJEC strongly reaffirmed India’s commitment to establishing a forward-looking economic partnership with Austria, rooted in mutual trust and shared values.
