India Advances Medical Tech with 3D Printed Bone Grafts
In a significant move to enhance India’s healthcare capabilities, the Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology (DST) has approved funding for Ceramat Private Limited, based in Palghar, Maharashtra. The financial support will aid in the project titled “Calcium Phosphate-based Standard and Customized Patient Specific Grafts by 3D Printing via Digital Light Processing Technique and Extrusion-based Equipment.” This initiative aims to develop and commercialize advanced, personalized bone grafts using locally produced bioceramic materials and innovative 3D printing technology.
Innovative Solutions in Bone Grafting
Ceramat Private Limited is dedicated to pioneering indigenous technologies in bio-ceramics and advanced ceramics, striving to produce high-quality alternatives to imported medical components. The company specializes in advanced biomaterials such as hydroxyapatite, beta-tricalcium phosphate, and bioactive glass, which are applicable in various fields including orthopaedics, oral care, and cosmetics.
Addressing the Need for Customization
Hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate are key materials that mimic the mineral makeup of natural bone, making them ideal for bone grafts and implants. Currently, much of the advanced bone graft products available in India are imported. Although Ceramat has successfully manufactured bone grafts using traditional methods, customizing these grafts to match the anatomical needs of individual patients represents a new challenge.

These cutting-edge techniques will allow for the creation of complex shapes and tailored structures that meet specific medical requirements.

By utilizing indigenous materials combined with state-of-the-art additive manufacturing, Ceramat is set to elevate its biomaterials capabilities from conventional grafts to sophisticated, digitally designed solutions. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the Government of India’s mission for Aatmanirbhar Bharat, focusing on self-reliance and the development of domestic medical technologies. It is anticipated that the project will reduce reliance on imported bioceramic products, bolster local supply chains, and potentially pave the way for international market opportunities.
