India Achieves Significant Leap in Passport Index, Now Ranked 77th

The Indian passport has made a remarkable comeback, climbing eight positions in the latest Henley Passport Index to secure the 77th spot, up from 85th last year. This significant improvement follows a decline in rankings last year, marking a positive shift in global mobility for Indian passport holders. With access to 59 destinations without a visa or with visa-on-arrival privileges, the Indian passport’s resurgence reflects changing dynamics in international travel and diplomacy.

India’s Passport Strengthens

The Henley Passport Index assesses the strength of passports based on the number of countries their holders can visit without a visa or with visa-on-arrival options. India’s rise in the rankings is attributed to the addition of two new destinations, enhancing the total number of visa-free entries to 59. Popular countries offering visa-free access include Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, while Sri Lanka and Myanmar provide visa-on-arrival facilities. This upward trend in India’s passport strength is a significant turnaround, especially after last year’s drop of five places in the index.

Shifts in Global Mobility Trends

The latest index reveals a broader shift in global mobility trends, with Asian countries emerging as leaders in passport strength. While India has improved its ranking, traditionally dominant passports from the United States and the United Kingdom are experiencing a decline. The UK has fallen to sixth place, and the US now sits at tenth, nearing the possibility of dropping out of the top ten for the first time in the index’s 20-year history. Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, the inventor of the passport index, emphasized that access to countries is earned through strategic diplomacy and active negotiations for visa waivers.

Changing Dynamics in Global Citizenship

According to Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners, the transformation in global migration patterns is influenced by evolving political dynamics and diplomatic realignments. He noted that there is a growing demand among American and British citizens for alternative residence and citizenship options, driven by increasingly inward-looking policies in their home countries. This trend highlights the importance of passport rankings, which reflect a country’s diplomatic influence and international relationships, rather than merely serving as travel documents.

Top Rankings and Global Context

In the latest rankings, Singapore retains its position as the world’s most powerful passport, allowing visa-free access to 193 destinations. Japan and South Korea follow closely in second place with access to 190 destinations. Meanwhile, Afghanistan ranks lowest, with its passport holders able to travel visa-free to just 25 countries. European nations continue to dominate the global mobility rankings, with several countries, including Germany, France, and Italy, tied for third place. As Asian countries like India and the UAE improve their mobility scores, the landscape of global travel continues to evolve.
