India Achieves Major Milestone in Clean Energy for 2025

India has reached an impressive milestone in its clean energy efforts in 2025, with non-fossil fuel installed capacity soaring to an all-time high of 266.78 gigawatts (GW). This record reflects a significant 22.6 percent increase from the previous year, when non-fossil capacity stood at 217.62 GW. The rise indicates that India added a remarkable 49.12 GW of new non-fossil energy capacity throughout the year, showcasing the nation’s rapid advancement in renewable energy.
Solar and Wind Drive Renewable Energy Expansion
Solar power was the standout performer in this growth, with capacity jumping from 97.86 GW in 2024 to 135.81 GW in 2025. This 38.8 percent increase highlights the pivotal role of solar energy in India’s clean energy strategy. Additionally, wind energy capacity rose steadily, increasing from 48.16 GW to 54.51 GW for a notable 13.2 percent growth. Together, solar and wind energy have been the primary drivers in expanding India’s renewable energy landscape during this period.
Bioenergy and Small Hydro Add to Clean Energy Diversification
Other renewable energy sectors also contributed to the overall growth in 2025. Bioenergy capabilities reached 11.61 GW, incorporating 0.55 GW from waste-to-energy off-grid projects. This advancement reflects India’s ongoing commitment to clean fuel generation and effective waste management solutions. Meanwhile, small hydro power capacity climbed to 5.16 GW, further bolstering localized and diverse renewable energy solutions. India’s large hydro power capacity remained steady at 50.91 GW, which includes over 7,175.6 megawatts (MW) committed to pumped storage, vital for enhancing grid stability and integrating renewable energy sources.
Policy Leadership Strengthens India’s Clean Energy Pathway
Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, emphasized that this record growth is a testament to the decisive policy direction, long-term vision, and effective implementation under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership. He stated that such progress reinforces India’s commitment to energy security, climate responsibility, and a self-sustaining green economy while steadfastly moving towards the ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. The Minister expressed confidence in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s continued collaboration with states and stakeholders to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy across the country.
