India Achieves Breakthrough in Quantum Communication

In a significant advancement for secure communications, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) have successfully tested Indiaโ€™s first Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) transmission over a 4-core Multi-Core Fibre (MCF). This milestone represents a pivotal step towards establishing quantum-secured communication networks in the country, enhancing both security and efficiency in data transmission.

Revolutionizing Data Transmission with Multi-Core Fibre

Multi-Core Fibre (MCF) technology is transforming the landscape of data transmission by allowing multiple cores within a single fibre to carry information. This innovation not only conserves physical space but also reduces infrastructure costs significantly. Traditionally, QKD requires a dedicated dark fibre for quantum channels, but MCF technology offers a unique advantage. It enables the separation of quantum and classical signals into distinct cores, allowing simultaneous transmission of QKD and high-capacity data traffic without compromising the integrity of the quantum signal.

In the recent tests, quantum signals were transmitted through one core while the remaining three cores handled high-speed user data. This setup successfully established a stable QKD link over distances exceeding 100 kilometers, demonstrating the robustness of quantum communication even in the presence of substantial classical data traffic.

C-DOT’s Role in Advancing Quantum Communication

C-DOT, Indiaโ€™s premier telecom research and development center, plays a crucial role in enhancing the nationโ€™s quantum communication capabilities. Under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), C-DOT has developed and deployed industry-grade QKD systems, which have received Technology Approval from the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC). This approval underscores the reliability and effectiveness of C-DOTโ€™s innovations in the field of secure communications.

The organizationโ€™s commitment to advancing quantum communication is evident in its ongoing projects and collaborations. By focusing on the development of QKD systems, C-DOT is positioning India as a leader in the global quantum communication landscape.

Sterlite Technologies: Pioneering Optical Innovations

Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) is a global leader in integrated digital networks, specializing in optical fibre manufacturing and network design. With over ten manufacturing plants worldwide and a customer base that spans more than 100 countries, STL is at the forefront of optical networking innovations. The company has recently developed Multi-Core Fibre (MCF), which utilizes Space Division Multiplexing to achieve ultra-high transmission capacity within the same diameter.

This collaboration with C-DOT highlights STL’s commitment to advancing Indiaโ€™s digital infrastructure. By integrating QKD with their MCF technology, STL is not only enhancing secure communication but also reinforcing Indiaโ€™s position in the global optical networking arena.

Statements from Industry Leaders

Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, โ€œThis initiative is a key milestone for Indiaโ€™s telecom ecosystem. This achievement clearly establishes the feasibility of integrated quantum-classical networks over next-generation optical fibres, drastically reducing costs for QKD deployments.โ€

Rahul Puri, CEO of STLโ€™s Optical Networking Business, echoed this sentiment, noting, โ€œThis breakthrough collaboration with C-DOT underscores Indiaโ€™s growing prowess in pioneering next-gen digital infrastructure. By successfully integrating QKD with our indigenously developed MCF, we have demonstrated how cutting-edge optical innovations can revolutionize secure communication.โ€

Both C-DOT and STL reaffirm their dedication to enhancing Indiaโ€™s capabilities in quantum communication and optical network innovations. This achievement lays a strong foundation for a cost-effective, secure, and resilient national quantum communication infrastructure.
