Inaudible Sound Technology: The Next Frontier in Wildfire Defense

A decade ago, two college students captured the internet’s attention with an innovative fire extinguisher powered by a 10-inch subwoofer. Despite the initial buzz, the technology faded from public view until now. Sonic Fire Tech, a startup, claims to have developed a groundbreaking acoustic fire suppression system that not only extinguishes flames but also offers protection against wildfires. With a recent $3.5 million seed funding round, the company aims to tackle the escalating wildfire crisis that costs the U.S. billions each year.

Reviving an Old Concept

The idea of using sound to combat fires is not new. In fact, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) explored this concept back in 2012. Numerous researchers have since investigated the potential of acoustic fire suppression. However, it is Sonic Fire Tech that has made significant strides in turning this concept into a viable product. The startup’s journey began when Michael Thomas, the chairman of the board, reached out to Geoff Bruder via LinkedIn. Bruder, who has a background with NASA focusing on heat and acoustics, was intrigued by Thomas’s vision. Together, they embarked on a mission to create a prototype that could effectively use sound to extinguish fires.

Bruder’s initial experiments involved using a subwoofer and various components sourced from local hardware stores. His first successful demonstration involved extinguishing a fire from a distance of seven feet. However, as they progressed, the team realized that audible frequencies could be harmful to human hearing. This led them to pivot their design towards infrasound, which operates below the threshold of human hearing, making it both effective and safe.

Innovative Technology Behind Sonic Fire Tech

Sonic Fire Tech’s system employs a large reciprocating piston, similar to those found in car engines, powered by an electric motor. This setup generates infrasound, which is sound below 20 Hz. Bruder explained that by designing the system to operate at these lower frequencies, they could achieve greater transmission distances while ensuring safety for users. Currently, the system can effectively suppress flames from a distance of 25 feet, with potential for larger systems to reach up to 330 feet.

The technology is designed to be installed on rooftops, where it can detect and respond to flames. The infrasound is channeled through rigid ducts positioned strategically along the roof’s ridge and under the eaves. This setup allows the system to target potential fire sources, such as debris in gutters and flames near walls. The system activates automatically when sensors detect a fire, providing a proactive approach to fire safety.

Addressing Wildfire Challenges

Wildfires have become a pressing issue in the United States, costing an estimated $424 billion annually. The situation has worsened in states like California, where insurers are increasingly hesitant to renew policies due to the frequency of devastating fires. Sonic Fire Tech aims to address this challenge by offering a fire suppression solution that does not rely on water, which can be scarce in wildfire-prone areas.

The startup plans to market its system at approximately 2% of a home’s value and is currently in discussions with insurance companies to validate the technology. A home-based system requires around 500 watts of electricity, and in case of power outages, the company is developing backup solutions using lead-acid batteries. This innovative approach positions Sonic Fire Tech as a potential game-changer in fire safety, especially in regions vulnerable to wildfires.

Future Prospects and Collaborations

Sonic Fire Tech is actively collaborating with major utility companies like PG&E and Southern California Edison to demonstrate its technology in residential settings. The startup has also signed a letter of intent with a chemical storage facility, indicating its commitment to expanding its applications. Bruder envisions a future where their system could serve as a replacement for traditional sprinkler systems, allowing homeowners to protect critical areas such as kitchens and living spaces.

As the threat of wildfires continues to grow, Sonic Fire Tech’s innovative approach to fire suppression could provide a much-needed solution for homeowners and communities alike. With ongoing development and partnerships, the startup is poised to make a significant impact in the realm of fire safety.
