Government Initiatives: Swachh Bharat Mission

The program has also introduced clean cooking gas connections to over 10.3 crore women, reducing the time and effort spent on traditional cooking methods. Addressing Menstrual Hygiene Management
Menstrual hygiene management is another critical area where the government has made significant strides. The Swachh Vidyalaya Mission ensures that all schools have functional toilets for girls. According to the UDISE+ 2021-22 report, 97.48% of government schools now have separate toilets for girls, and 98.2% have access to drinking water. This infrastructure is vital for encouraging girls to attend school and participate fully in their education.
To further support menstrual hygiene, the government has made sanitary napkins tax-exempt, making them more affordable. The Jan Aushadhi Suvidha Sanitary Napkins, sold at just Rupee 1 per pad, are available through government-sponsored outlets. Additionally, the government has launched schemes to promote menstrual hygiene management among adolescent girls, contributing to increased enrollment in educational institutions. These efforts aim to change societal attitudes towards menstruation and empower young girls to manage their health with dignity.
Creating Safe Spaces for Working Women
The government is also focused on providing safe and secure facilities for working women. The Sakhi Niwas initiative aims to establish clean and functional hostels for women entering the workforce. This program is part of the broader “Mission Shakti,” which seeks to empower women through safety and security measures.
To support this initiative, the government has allocated Rs. 5000 crore for the establishment of new working women’s hostels. These facilities will ensure that women have access to safe living conditions, which is essential for their well-being and productivity. By addressing the unique challenges faced by women in the workforce, the government is taking significant steps toward gender equality and empowerment.
