Impact of Iran Conflict on India: Rising Concerns Over LPG Shortages and Affected States

As tensions in West Asia escalate, cities across India are experiencing significant disruptions in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders, crucial for restaurants, hotels, and food businesses. Major urban centers like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Chennai are already feeling the impact, with authorities prioritizing domestic LPG supplies for households to ensure residential consumers have access to cooking gas. This shift has led to a tightening of availability for commercial establishments, raising concerns about potential shutdowns in the hospitality sector.

Impact on Karnataka’s Hospitality Sector

In Karnataka, the situation is particularly dire. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reported that the entire hotel and commercial industry in the state has been adversely affected. The Bangalore Hotels Association announced that operations in Bengaluru could face disruptions starting March 10 due to a sudden halt in the supply of commercial gas cylinders. This stoppage is attributed to rising energy costs and supply constraints linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The association emphasized that the hotel industry, which serves a vital role for many, including students and medical professionals, could face severe operational challenges until gas supplies normalize. PC Rao, the honorary president of the association, noted that only about 10% of hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru received their LPG supply recently, indicating a looming crisis.

Challenges in Maharashtra

Mumbai is already witnessing the repercussions of the LPG supply disruption. Local dealers report delays in cooking gas availability, with consumers facing wait times of two to eight days for refills. The supply of commercial cylinders for hotels and restaurants has been completely halted, pushing eateries towards a potential crisis. Some establishments may resort to purchasing domestic cylinders from the black market, which poses both legal and safety risks. Additionally, Pune’s municipal commissioner, Naval Kishor Ram, indicated that 18 crematoriums in the city, reliant on LPG, would temporarily shut down to prevent shortages, although other facilities remain operational.

Concerns in West Bengal

The conflict in West Asia is also raising alarms in West Bengal, particularly in Kolkata, where restaurants and bakeries are scrambling for alternatives following the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas’s suspension of non-domestic LPG cylinder distribution. Industry sources warn that continued supply suspension could severely impact operations in the hospitality sector. In response to these challenges, the government is implementing measures to prioritize domestic cooking gas supplies for households, aiming to minimize disruptions to daily life for citizens.

Government Response to the Crisis

In light of the ongoing crisis, the Indian government has taken several steps to manage the situation. Authorities have directed oil refineries to increase LPG production, specifically for domestic consumption, in response to geopolitical disruptions affecting fuel supply. The gap between LPG refill bookings has been extended from 21 days to 25 days to discourage hoarding and black marketing. Additionally, a committee of three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) has been established to review requests for LPG supply from commercial users, including restaurants and hotels. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact of the supply disruptions and ensure that essential services can continue to operate.
