IMF Supports India’s Economic Outlook, Citing Strong Fundamentals and Controlled Inflation

India’s economic outlook is bright, according to the latest assessment from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The organization highlights strong policy foundations, resilient growth, and well-managed inflation as key factors contributing to this positive perspective. The IMF’s report emphasizes that India’s economic performance is bolstered by prudent macroeconomic management and a decade of structural reforms, which continue to yield significant benefits.

Robust Economic Growth and Structural Reforms

The IMF’s report indicates that India’s real GDP growth has remained strong, particularly following a vigorous recovery from the pandemic. The agency credits several reforms, including the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), inflation targeting, and the expansion of digital public infrastructure, as foundational elements for sustained economic growth. These reforms have not only supported economic expansion but have also led to improved living standards and a notable decrease in extreme poverty, which now stands at 5.3 percent.

In the fiscal year 2024-25, India’s economy is projected to grow by 6.5 percent, driven by robust private consumption and public investment. The second quarter of fiscal year 2025-26 saw an impressive GDP growth of 7.8 percent, aided by strong rural demand and stable inflation. The IMF noted a decline in headline inflation to 1.5 percent in September 2025, primarily due to lower food prices, while core inflation rose to 4.6 percent. Additionally, the labor market has shown steady improvement, with formal employment and real wages increasing in both rural and urban areas, and unemployment remaining low at 5.2 percent.

Fiscal Policy and Financial Stability

The IMF’s assessment highlights that India’s fiscal policy remains broadly balanced, with the central government continuing its consolidation efforts while states are increasing social spending. A recent reform of the GST, which simplifies tax slabs and reduces compliance burdens, has been welcomed as a measure that will likely enhance consumption and broaden the tax base. Financial conditions in India have also improved, supported by actions from the Reserve Bank of India. The report notes a recovery in equity markets, easing bond yields, and stabilized credit conditions, despite a moderation in bank credit growth.

India’s external economic indicators remain stable, with the current account deficit recorded at 0.6 percent of GDP for the fiscal year 2024-25, buoyed by strong services exports. Foreign exchange reserves have risen to $695 billion as of October, providing a solid buffer against external shocks. The IMF’s outlook suggests that despite facing external challenges, India’s growth trajectory remains robust, supported by favorable domestic conditions.

Future Projections and Policy Recommendations

Looking ahead, the IMF projects real GDP growth of 6.6 percent for fiscal year 2025-26 and 6.2 percent for fiscal year 2026-27. The organization emphasizes the importance of maintaining prudent macroeconomic policies to foster an environment conducive to sustained growth. It calls for agile responses to external uncertainties, particularly concerning tariffs, and suggests that fiscal support should be targeted, transparent, and time-bound to mitigate tariff-related disruptions.

The IMF also stresses the need for medium-term fiscal consolidation to rebuild economic buffers, supported by enhanced domestic revenue mobilization. It advocates for a data-driven monetary policy, indicating that there may be room for further easing if tariffs persist over an extended period. The report concludes by recommending that the exchange rate be allowed to function as a shock absorber and that financial policies continue to safeguard stability by addressing sector-specific vulnerabilities.
