IMD Enhances Climate Services for a Resilient Future
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has steadily expanded its climate services in the country since 1985. With the establishment of the National Climate Centre in Pune in 2005, and its designation as a Regional Climate Centre for South Asia in 2010, IMD transformed its approach to climate service delivery. A pivotal moment came in 2017 when the Pune office was rebranded as the Office of Climate Research and Services (CRS), allowing it to focus on crucial climate monitoring, predictive analytics, and data management.
Today, the CRS office produces regular climate diagnostic bulletins and seasonal forecasts, making it the backbone of climate services in India. In 2016, IMD also became a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recognized Regional Climate Centre, and as of 2023, it operates as a Global Production Centre for Long Range Forecasting, underscoring its critical role in regional climate evaluation.
New Framework for Climate Services
In alignment with the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), the IMD has initiated the National Framework for Climate Services (NFCS). A recent workshop, held on October 5–6, 2023, collected input from diverse stakeholders, including state governments and research entities, to ensure a cohesive application of the NFCS in the Indian context. This collaborative framework aims to enhance coordination among climate-sensitive sectors, including agriculture, water resources, and disaster management, providing tailored climate information that supports informed decision-making.
Stakeholder Engagement
To further refine its climate services, IMD has conducted numerous state-level consultations involving various government departments and sectors. These discussions brought to light essential gaps and opportunities for improving accessibility and usability of weather and climate services across India. Engaging users from agriculture to urban planning ensures that services are relevant and beneficial to all sectors impacted by climate.
Advancements in Technology
The implementation of advanced weather and climate modeling systems under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) marks a significant leap in forecasting capabilities. With the incorporation of Numerical Weather Prediction models and high-resolution regional models, IMD has improved its ability to forecast a variety of weather events, from monsoon variability to extreme weather occurrences. Enhanced data assimilation techniques, supported by satellite and ground-based observations, further bolster accuracy in forecasting.
Modernizing Observational Systems
IMD’s investment in modern observational systems, including the installation of 47 Doppler Weather Radars and lightning detection systems at 104 locations, underscores its commitment to advancing capabilities. Developments like the Bharat Forecast System offer precise weather predictions, including rainfall forecasts at the local level, improving community preparedness and response.
International Collaboration and Training
IMD is focused not only on national advancements but also on international cooperation. Collaborating with global entities such as the WMO and implementing international training programs, IMD actively contributes to climate services development across South Asia. The Meteorological Training Institute (MTI) strengthens capacity building through training programs for participants from developing countries, fostering a collaborative environment for global climate service enhancement.
Through these concerted efforts, the India Meteorological Department aims to provide more reliable weather and climate forecasts, ultimately enhancing decision-making processes across sectors, thus paving the way for a climate-resilient future.
