IICA and Directorate General Resettlement Launch Third Batch of Certification Programme for Senior Defence Officers
The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) has launched its third certification program for defense officers in collaboration with the Directorate General Resettlement (DGR) under the Ministry of Defence. The event took place today at the IICA Campus in Manesar, Gurugram, and includes 30 senior officers from all three branches of the armed forces. This two-week program aims to equip participants with essential knowledge in corporate governance, preparing them for roles as Independent Directors in various organizations.
The certification program is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of corporate governance principles and practices. It targets senior officers, both serving and recently retired, to help them transition into corporate roles effectively. Participants include high-ranking officials such as Lieutenant Generals, Air Vice Marshals, and Major Generals, who will engage in discussions and training sessions focused on their future contributions to the corporate sector. The program emphasizes the importance of understanding the roles and responsibilities of Independent Directors, which is crucial for effective governance in both public and private companies. By leveraging their extensive experience in leadership, strategy, and project management, these officers are expected to enhance the development of Indian corporations and, consequently, the nation.
Inaugural Addresses Highlight Core Values
The inauguration ceremony featured notable addresses from Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar and Cmde Vikrant Kishore, Principal Director of DGR. Lt Gen Katiyar drew parallels between military and corporate environments, emphasizing that trust and integrity are foundational values for successful Independent Directors. He asserted that these ethical standards are vital for promoting good governance practices across corporate entities. His insights aim to inspire participants to adopt these principles as they transition into corporate roles, ensuring that their military values contribute positively to the business landscape.
Shri Gyaneshwar Kumar Singh, DG & CEO of IICA, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the significance of boards in corporate governance. He discussed the challenges and opportunities that contemporary boards face and the critical role Independent Directors play in navigating these complexities. Singh also highlighted the traits that companies and executive search firms seek in board candidates, encouraging participants to recognize their unique qualifications. He called for a stronger collaboration between Indian corporations and the armed forces, advocating for the inclusion of defense officers on corporate boards to leverage their strategic expertise.
Setting the Course for Future Leaders
Dr. Niraj Gupta, the program director and Head of the School of Corporate Governance & Public Policy, set the tone for the course by discussing the intersections of public governance, military governance, and corporate governance. He emphasized IICA’s role as a knowledge hub for corporate affairs, aiming to foster best practices and enhance the capacity of governance professionals. The program also featured welcoming remarks from Col. Amandeep Singh Puri, Chief Administrative Officer of IICA, and was facilitated by Dr. Anindita Chakrabarti, Principal Research Associate at IICA, ensuring a structured and enriching experience for all participants.
