IICA and DGR Conclude Second Certification Program for Seniors

The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) recently concluded its second batch of a specialized certification program aimed at senior defense officers. Held from May 5 to May 16, 2025, at the IICA Campus in Manesar, Gurugram, the program brought together 30 high-ranking officials from the Indian Armed Forces. Participants included Air Marshals, Vice Admirals, Rear Admirals, and other senior ranks, all focused on enhancing their corporate governance skills and understanding the intersection of military and corporate leadership.

Program Overview and Objectives

The two-week certification program was designed to equip senior defense officers with essential knowledge and skills related to corporate governance. The curriculum aimed to orient participants on the regulatory frameworks governing corporate affairs and the roles and responsibilities of Independent Directors. By bridging the gap between military governance and corporate practices, the program sought to prepare these veterans for impactful roles in the corporate sector. The initiative underscores the belief that the competencies developed in the armed forces can significantly contribute to the business landscape in India.

Valedictory Session Highlights

The valedictory session was presided over by Shri Gyaneshwar Kumar Singh, DG & CEO of IICA, who emphasized the vital role veterans can play in the evolving corporate environment. He noted that the armed forces already embody key principles of good governance, such as ethics and integrity. Singh highlighted how the unique experiences and skills of these officers position them as potential changemakers in the corporate world. He also stressed the importance of entrepreneurship development, particularly in the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector, as a means to generate employment for fellow veterans and contribute to national growth.

Expert Insights and Contributions

Dr. Niraj Gupta, Head of the School of Corporate Governance & Public Policy at IICA, addressed the participants, expressing gratitude for their commitment throughout the program. He discussed the convergence and divergence between public governance, military governance, and corporate governance. Dr. Gupta reiterated the program’s objectives, which included providing a comprehensive understanding of corporate governance principles and preparing participants to effectively contribute to corporate boards. The program was facilitated by Dr. Anindita Chakrabarti and CS Asheesh Kumar, who ensured a smooth execution of the proceedings.

IICA’s Commitment to Governance Initiatives

The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs continues to play a pivotal role in promoting good governance and responsible business practices. By acting as a knowledge hub, IICA bridges the gap between regulators, ministries, corporates, and other stakeholders. The institute’s initiatives aim to foster a culture of accountability and transparency in corporate affairs, ensuring that veterans are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of the business world. Through such programs, IICA reinforces its commitment to enhancing corporate governance standards in India.
