IHMCL Hosts Workshop with FinTech Companies to Enhance FASTag Ecosystem

To explore innovative applications of the FASTag system, a workshop was held in New Delhi, organized by the Indian Highways and Management Company Limited (IHMCL), which is backed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The event aimed to gather insights from leading fintech companies on regulatory compliance, grievance redressal, security, and non-toll applications of FASTag, all to support its next phase of growth. Key figures in attendance included Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, along with other government officials and fintech representatives.

Workshop Highlights and Objectives

The workshop served as a platform for discussions on the potential of the FASTag ecosystem, which extends beyond toll collection. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the importance of collaboration with fintech companies to enhance user convenience and streamline transport services. He stated that the goal is to create a digitally empowered National Highway network that benefits every commuter. The workshop featured various sessions where industry experts shared their insights on the evolution of FASTag and its future applications.

Government Officials’ Perspectives

During the event, V. Umashankar, Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, highlighted the transformative impact of fintech innovations on India’s electronic toll collection system. He expressed the need for a cashless, convenient, and fraud-free tolling experience. Umashankar noted that the government aims to facilitate innovations that improve the overall experience for road users. Similarly, Santosh Kumar Yadav, Chairman of NHAI, remarked that the workshop would pave the way for future innovations that expand the utility of the FASTag system beyond toll collections.

Innovative Ideas and Future Applications

The workshop included focused group sessions where participants presented innovative ideas for the adoption of FASTag in various use cases. These included managing FASTag transactions, utilizing FASTag for electric vehicle charging, parking solutions, and insurance. The discussions aimed to explore how FASTag can serve as a flexible payment tool and introduce other innovations that enhance user experience on National Highways.

Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling and Current Statistics

An important aspect of the workshop was to raise awareness among fintech companies about Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) Tolling. This technology-driven approach allows for barrier-free tolling, enabling transactions through advanced RFID readers and ANPR cameras. Currently, the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) FASTag program boasts a 98.5% payment rate and operates across 1,728 toll plazas, including both National and State Highways. With over 38 banks issuing approximately 11.04 crore FASTags, the workshop outlined key strategies to enhance user convenience and promote good governance through cutting-edge technology.
