ICMR Licenses Indigenous Biomedical Innovations to Boost Healthcare
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has taken a significant leap forward in enhancing healthcare solutions by licensing three groundbreaking biomedical technologies to prominent Indian pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturers. This initiative, part of ICMR’s Medical Innovations Patent Mitra program, aims to further develop, manufacture, and commercialize these innovative technologies, marking a crucial step in making affordable healthcare more accessible.
Breakthrough Technologies Ready for Commercial Use
The technologies licensed include SHetA2, a pioneering therapeutic approach for treating Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN), which has been handed over to Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Additionally, two advanced vaccine technologies targeting enteric bacterial infections, created at the ICMR–National Institute of Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI) in Kolkata, have been licensed to Biological E Ltd. These transfers not only signal progress in India’s healthcare landscape but also strengthen the country’s biomedical innovation ecosystem.
Targeted Approach to Cancer Treatment
SHetA2 stands out as a first-of-its-kind targeted therapeutic candidate, developed through a collaboration between Dr. Showket Hussain from ICMR National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (ICMR-NICPR) and Dr. Doris M. Benbrook at the Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma, USA. This technology uniquely focuses on eradicating precancerous cells induced by HPV, while leaving healthy cells unharmed. It promises to offer patients a safe, budget-friendly, and less invasive treatment option for cervical cancer.
Advancements in Vaccine Development
The two vaccine technologies, developed by Dr. Santasabuj Das and his team at ICMR-NIRBI, include a fusion construct featuring the outer membrane protein of Salmonella typhi, aimed at serving as a next-generation vaccine for typhoid. Furthermore, a recombinant vaccine composition designed to combat both Salmonella typhi/paratyphi and Shigella infections also shows promise in providing broader protection against prevalent enteric bacterial pathogens.
