ICAR and NDDB Unite to Boost India’s Dairy Sector
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has made a significant step towards improving India’s dairy sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). This collaboration aims to strengthen multidisciplinary research, innovation, and capacity building, focusing on key areas such as dairy production, processing, and value addition. A primary goal is to empower the millions of dairy farmers across the nation.
Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Development
The MoU was formalized by Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science) at ICAR, alongside Shri S. Regupathi, Executive Director (Operations) at NDDB. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, the Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of ICAR, as well as Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman of NDDB.
Breaking Down Barriers for Innovative Solutions
In his address, Dr. Jat underscored the need for integrated research approaches to overcome institutional hurdles. He expressed hope that this MoU would facilitate a collaborative framework to tackle various challenges within the dairy sector, such as climate resilience, low productivity, and value chain development. Additionally, he advocated for the implementation of gaushalas to manage stray cattle effectively and emphasized the importance of developing sustainable models for manure management and biogas utilization. Furthermore, he pointed out that enhancing fodder quality is crucial for increasing livestock productivity.
Vision for a Developed India
Dr. Meenesh Shah elaborated on the potential of this partnership to create a vast platform for integrated scientific collaboration aimed at achieving the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India). He noted that NDDB has previously collaborated with ICAR on projects related to ration balancing and mineral mapping. Shah expressed enthusiasm for delving into ethno-veterinary medicine and addressing emerging challenges in crop and livestock sectors. Moreover, he highlighted opportunities for synergistic efforts across various agricultural value chains.
Bridging Research and Field Practices
The MoU seeks to combine ICAR’s scientific expertise with NDDB’s field experience, addressing the pressing challenges throughout the dairy value chain, especially at the grassroots level. The collaboration emphasizes essential components such as knowledge transfer, technology innovation, human resource development, and the execution of joint training programs for researchers, professionals, and farmers. This strategic partnership aims to translate research findings into practical solutions that will enhance productivity, profitability, and sustainability within India’s dairy industry.
A Collaborative Future
The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials and esteemed representatives from both ICAR and NDDB, symbolizing a united front in advancing India’s dairy sector. With this ambitious partnership, the organizations are poised to make significant strides in creating a resilient and thriving dairy economy.
