Historic National Round Table Conference to Revitalize Electoral Processes

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to host the much-anticipated National Round Table Conference with State Election Commissioners (SECs) on February 24, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This landmark event marks the first gathering of its kind in 27 years, with the last conference held back in 1999. With a focus on enhancing electoral processes, this meeting promises to reinforce the collaboration between the ECI and various state bodies.

Key Participants and Objectives

The conference will be chaired by the Chief Election Commissioner, Shri Gyanesh Kumar, alongside Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi. All State Election Commissioners, along with their legal and technical teams, are expected to attend. Additionally, Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from all 36 States and Union Territories will play a significant role in the discussions.

Fostering Cooperation and Technological Advancements

The primary goal of this Round Table Conference is to cultivate collaboration and synergy between the ECI and SECs in managing electoral logistics and processes within their legal frameworks. Through constructive dialogue, attendees aim to strengthen the spirit of cooperative federalism in electoral management.

This day-long conference will feature discussions centered around several critical issues, such as sharing technology, enhancing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and refining Electoral Rolls. Senior officials from the ECI will showcase key technological advancements and operational initiatives, including the recently launched ECINET digital platform, which has the potential to transform electoral services.

Presentations on Innovations and Legal Frameworks

Participants can expect presentations highlighting the robustness and transparency of EVMs, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed about the safeguards in place. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of electors’ eligibility in various States and Union Territories, aligned with the Representation of the People Act, 1950, will facilitate detailed discussions on the legal frameworks governing Electoral Roll preparation nationwide.

Role of State Election Commissions

State Election Commissions are established by the laws of their respective states as per the provisions of the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments. They hold the responsibility for the supervision, direction, and control of the electoral rolls, as well as the conduct of all elections to the Panchayati Raj institutions and Municipal Bodies under Articles 243K and 243ZA of the Constitution.

This upcoming conference represents a significant step towards revitalizing electoral processes in India, ensuring that democratic practices are upheld and modernized in the face of evolving challenges.
