HDFC Bank Submits Two CEO Candidates to RBI for Consideration
MUMBAI: HDFC Bank has submitted two names to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the position of managing director and CEO, initiating the succession process ahead of Sashidhar Jagdishan’s departure at the end of October. The bank’s board has also approved a restructuring of its senior management, which includes promoting chief credit officer Jimmy Tata to executive director for three years, pending RBI approval. Additionally, the bank is seeking a one-year extension for executive director V Srinivasa Rangan, effective from November 23, 2026, and plans to create another executive director position.
Expanded Board to Strengthen Oversight
The expanded board is expected to enhance oversight of HDFC Bank’s subsidiaries, such as HDFC Life, HDFC AMC, and HDFC ERGO. A source familiar with the situation stated, “The period of uncertainty is over. The bank has sought to resolve all the issues that it had faced in recent months and with a new CEO in place it is poised to be back on rail.” The board has been addressing various challenges, including appointing a new chairman, former Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, and tackling allegations of bond mis-selling and issues related to deposits from a Maharashtra public sector unit.
HDFC Bank shares closed 6.9% higher on the NYSE on Friday. The succession process was triggered by Jagdishan’s decision not to pursue another term when his current tenure concludes in October 2026. Deputy managing director Kaizad M Bharucha is considered a leading internal candidate for the CEO role, having joined HDFC Bank in 1995 and the board in 2014.
Names circulating in financial circles for the CEO position include former SBI chairman Dinesh Khara, Citi India head K Balasubramanian, ICICI Prudential Life CEO Anup Bagchi, and former HDFC Bank DMD Paresh Sukthankar. The board changes also aim to bolster the bank’s internal succession pipeline as it finalizes the integration following its merger with HDFC Ltd. Tata’s promotion adds a senior credit and risk-management executive to the board, while Rangan’s proposed extension would ensure continuity in real estate finance, treasury, and capital management. Rangan joined HDFC Bank’s board in November 2023 after serving as executive director and CFO of the former HDFC Ltd. The CEO shortlist and the proposed executive director appointments are now pending RBI approval.
