Hazelight Studios Launches Next Game Development

Hazelight Studios, the developer behind the acclaimed co-op adventure game Split Fiction, has officially begun work on its next project. Just two weeks after the successful launch of Split Fiction, studio director Josef Fares expressed his enthusiasm for the new title during a recent podcast interview. While details remain scarce, Fares emphasized that the studio is committed to its co-op gaming roots.

Excitement for Future Projects

In a conversation on the Friends Per Second podcast, Fares shared insights about the studio’s current focus. He noted that the team is thrilled with the positive reception of Split Fiction, which launched earlier this month. However, Fares is already looking forward to what lies ahead. โ€œFor me, personally, every time a game is out, I’m kind of done with it. I’m kind of like, โ€˜Okay, now it’s the next thing,โ€™โ€ he stated. He acknowledged that Split Fiction has been particularly well-received, but his attention is firmly on the next project. Fares revealed that work on the upcoming game commenced about a month ago, just prior to the release of Split Fiction. Although he could not divulge specific details, he hinted that the new title would likely continue the studio’s tradition of cooperative gameplay. โ€œCo-op will always be part of the studio’s DNA,โ€ he affirmed, indicating that fans can expect more engaging multiplayer experiences in the future.

Strong Partnership with EA

During the podcast, Fares also discussed Hazelight’s relationship with its publishing partner, Electronic Arts (EA). All of Hazelight’s games, including A Way Out, It Takes Two, and Split Fiction, have been released under the EA Originals label. Fares clarified that the studio does not pitch its projects to EA; instead, they inform the publisher of their plans. โ€œEA is a supporter. We don’t pitch games to them. We say, โ€˜We’re going to do this.โ€™ That’s it,โ€ he explained. Fares emphasized the respect and autonomy Hazelight enjoys within its partnership with EA. โ€œThey have zero, and I mean zero, thing to say about what we’re doing next,โ€ he stated. He acknowledged that while some may have skepticism about EA’s practices with other developers, his experience has been positive. โ€œWith us, no. They respect us. They respect what we do,โ€ he added, highlighting the successful collaboration between the two entities.

Split Fiction’s Success

Split Fiction, which launched on March 6 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, has quickly become a commercial and critical success. The game achieved the highest rating of 2025 on Metacritic and sold one million copies within just 48 hours of its release. Following this impressive debut, Hazelight announced that Split Fiction had reached two million copies sold within its first week. This remarkable achievement underscores the studio’s growing prominence in the gaming industry and sets high expectations for their upcoming projects.
