Guwahati Unveils Major Cultural Complex to Boost Northeast’s Arts
In a significant cultural milestone for the Northeast, the Jyoti-Bishnu International Cultural Complex was inaugurated today in Guwahati. The event was led by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, alongside Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This newly established auditorium stands as the largest of its kind in the entire region, marking a pivotal moment for arts and culture in Assam.
A Hub for Cultural Exchange
The Jyoti-Bishnu International Cultural Complex is named after two eminent figures in Assam’s cultural history: Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala and Kalaguru Bishnuprasad Rabha. Designed to be a modern venue for the performing arts, it can accommodate nearly 5,000 spectators. The complex is prepared to host various events, including music concerts, theatrical performances, film screenings, dance festivals, academic conferences, and major cultural conventions.

During the inauguration, Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the importance of the center in integrating Assam into the cultural economy of the Northeast. He described the facility as a dynamic platform aimed at nurturing young talent and connecting local creatives with larger audiences beyond Assam. “This complex promotes a thriving environment for folk and classical traditions while encouraging modern artistic expression,” he stated.

Sonowal reflected on the contributions of Agarwala and Rabha, calling Agarwala a pioneer of modern Assamese culture and the creator of Assam’s first feature film, Joymoti. He characterized Rabha as a multifaceted artist whose influence spanned poetry, music, and social reform, shaping the cultural identity of Assam.

According to Sonowal, the complex exemplifies a strategic decision to harmonize cultural preservation with contemporary facilities. He expressed that it is essential to not only conserve heritage but also to amplify it through visibility and continuity.
