GST Reductions Enhance Diwali Shopping Experience

Small businesses across India are experiencing a significant surge in sales, driven by recent cuts in Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the approach of the festive season. Industry representatives report heightened demand in various sectors, including toys, textiles, footwear, and auto accessories. The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is closely monitoring these developments and plans to conduct a review soon, following positive initial feedback from businesses.

Impact of GST Cuts on Small Businesses

The recent shift to a two-slab GST system, with rates set at 5% and 18%, has provided a much-needed boost to small businesses. The government lowered tax rates on numerous household items, consumer durables, and automobiles, which has led to an increase in orders for many small enterprises. A senior official from the MSME ministry stated that while the feedback has been encouraging, it is still early to draw definitive conclusions about the long-term effects of these changes. Many businesses are reporting robust order books, indicating a positive trend in consumer spending.

Rakesh Chabhra, president of the Rai Industries Association, highlighted that the auto accessories sector has seen a notable increase in demand. He anticipates a 20-25% rise in sales over the next six months, attributing this to the reduction in GST rates from 28% to 18%. This adjustment has also resulted in an 8.5% decrease in prices for auto accessories, further stimulating consumer interest.

Clothing Sector Benefits from Tax Reforms

The clothing industry is also reaping the benefits of the recent GST reforms. Animesh Saxena, general secretary of the Garment Exporters & Manufacturers Association, noted a significant uptick in consumer interest for apparel priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000. The GST rate for clothing items under Rs 2,500 has been reduced to 5%, which has encouraged more consumers to make purchases. Saxena reported a 15-20% increase in demand for apparel this festive season compared to last year, attributing this growth to the favorable tax changes that have invigorated consumer spending.

The festive season typically sees increased shopping activity, and this year appears to be no exception. The combination of lower GST rates and the festive spirit has created a conducive environment for retailers and manufacturers alike.

Optimism in the Toy and Footwear Industries

Toy manufacturers are also expressing optimism as they witness a buoyant sales environment. Manu Gupta, chairman of the Toy Association of India, remarked that the combination of GST reforms and the festive season has positively influenced consumer sentiment. He indicated that manufacturers have sufficient capacity to meet the anticipated surge in demand, thanks to the favorable tariff situation.

Similarly, the footwear sector is benefiting from the recent tax changes. Gopal Gupta, president of the Agra Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Chamber, explained that footwear priced below Rs 2,500 has moved into a lower tax slab under the new GST rates. This adjustment is expected to enhance demand for these products, making them more accessible to consumers.
