GPS Technology Transforms Fishing in Car Nicobar

In a significant development for the fishing communities of Car Nicobar, the introduction of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices has transformed the way local fishers operate. This innovation not only enhances fishing efficiency but also ensures a steady supply of fish for the community. Fishers like Mr. Junaid from Teetop village and Mr. Abdul Sattar from Chuchucha village are already reaping the benefits, selling their catches in markets and boosting their incomes.

The Nicobarese people have a long-standing tradition of fishing, with techniques passed down through generations. However, their experience has often been hampered by unpredictable sea conditions and lack of precise navigation tools. Many fisherfolk would often lose their way during sudden weather changes, which not only led to lost catches but also endangered lives.

To address these challenges, the Central Island Technological Research Institute has rolled out GPS devices tailored for the local fishing environment through the SEED Division programme of the Department of Science and Technology. Local fishers received training in GPS navigation, allowing them to quickly learn modern fishing techniques. Surveys were conducted to identify the needs and challenges faced by the fishermen, facilitating better technology adoption with the support of the Tribal Council.

Enhancing Fishing Efficiency

The implementation of GPS technology has revolutionized fishing for many local communities. Fishermen can now easily locate productive fishing grounds, significantly reducing the time required to find the best spots. This innovation has led to a notable increase in daily fish catches, with reports indicating a staggering 168% growth, even as fishers spend less time on the water.

The improvement in fish availability translates not only to fuller nets but also richer, more nutritious meals for families and the wider community. As fish catches grow, local households enjoy greater nutritional intake, contributing to better health outcomes. Furthermore, the additional income allows families to access diverse food sources, enhancing overall nutrition.

A Coastal fisheries information hub has been established at Car Nicobar Island, where ten GPS devices were distributed among tribal fishermen. With five devices designated for individual use and five reserved for communal fishing efforts, the initiative is set to empower local fishers further.
