Government Unveils Major Infrastructure Projects to Boost Connectivity
The 109th meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG) convened at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) focused on evaluating critical infrastructure initiatives in India. The meeting aimed to enhance multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency, aligning with the Prime Minister’s GatiShakti National Master Plan (PMGS NMP). During this session, the NPG assessed two rail projects, one metro project, and one airport project for their adherence to the integrated multimodal principles of PM GatiShakti, aimed at fostering economic growth and improving accessibility across the nation.
New Railway Lines Across the Nation
The proposed third railway line between Jalandhar Cantt and Jammu Tawi spans 210.750 km and will traverse the states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. This project will significantly enhance rail capacity and connectivity in an economically and strategically vital corridor, which includes 27 stations. This new rail line promises to boost trade by facilitating the easier movement of agricultural products and construction materials while also ensuring expedited transport of defence personnel and supplies to border areas.
Another key project is the third line between Manikpur and Itarsi, covering 518.532 km across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. This proposed line, which traverses essential districts like Jabalpur and Satna, aims to improve operational capacity and alleviate congestion in the rail network. By supporting increased passenger and freight traffic, this infrastructure upgrade is vital for accommodating future demands.
Strategic Development of Aviation in Assam
In Assam, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has put forth plans for a Greenfield Airport at Doloo in Silchar. This strategic location, adjacent to National Highway NH-27, aims to meet the rising demand for air travel while ensuring modern aviation infrastructure. The new airport is expected to serve as a catalyst for socio-economic growth in the Cachar district, boosting tourism and trade.
Enhancing Urban Mobility in Gujarat
The government is also working on expanding Surat Metro’s Corridor II through Phase I, which will extend from Saroli to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (HSR) corridor. This 4.4 km extension will include three stations, with future provisions for two more. Designed to seamlessly connect with the HSR corridor, this metro extension is set to enhance urban mobility and support regional integration.
Collectively, these infrastructure projects underscore the government’s commitment to fostering multimodal connectivity, enhancing economic development, and improving lives across various regions of India.
