Government Unveils Latest IAS and IPS Recruitment Figures
The Indian government has released updated figures related to the recruitment of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, emphasizing its commitment to upholding reservation guidelines. According to a recent statement by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State, a total of 180 IAS candidates are recruited annually through the Civil Services Examination (CSE) since 2012, with 4% of seats specifically reserved for Persons with Benchmarks Disabilities (PwBD).
As of January 1, 2025, the total authorized strength for IAS and IPS officers stands at 6,877, with 5,099 currently in position. The allocation of candidates is a continuous process, with ongoing assessments of vacancies ensuring compliance with reservation norms. Notably, there are currently no backlog vacancies in both IAS and IPS, reflecting efficient management of these prestigious services.

The latest data presented in Annexure-A highlights the total sanctioned strength of IAS and IPS officers, along with the number of currently occupied and vacant positions. For instance, in the AGMUT cadre, 542 positions are authorized, of which 457 are filled. Similarly, a close look at state-wise figures reveals disparities in appointment statistics across the country.
For example, Uttar Pradesh holds the largest sanctioned strength of IAS officers at 652, with 541 currently in position, indicating robust recruitment efforts in the state. In comparison, states like Sikkim and Nagaland have a significantly lower number of sanctioned positions, with just 48 and 94, respectively. A total of 509 vacancies remain in the IAS, while the IPS cadre has a shorterfall of 459 officers.
Commitment to Diversity in Recruitment
Further insights from Annexure-B detail the number of IAS and IPS officers from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) appointed as direct recruits over the past five years (CSE 2020 to CSE 2024). In total, 245 OBC, 135 SC, and 67 ST candidates were appointed to the IAS; the IPS saw similar recruitment with 255 OBC, 141 SC, and 71 ST candidates, showcasing the government’s commitment to diversity and representation.
