Government Reviews Key Wildlife Proposals in Latest Meeting
The 88th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) took place today in New Delhi, signaling a commitment to sustainable development in the face of pressing environmental concerns. Chaired by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, the meeting focused on a variety of proposals pertaining to public utility services and environmental conservation.
During the session, the committee evaluated 70 proposals related to essential services and infrastructure projects located near Protected Areas, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Tiger Reserves, and Eco-Sensitive Zones. These proposals are reviewed under the Wild Life (Protection) Act of 1972, balancing ecological sensitivity with community needs.
Focus on Public Utility and Infrastructure
Among the key public utility proposals addressed were those concerning drinking water supply initiatives under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), the establishment of primary and community health centers, as well as infrastructure developments like road widening, 4G mobile towers, and new transmission lines. A noteworthy proposal included a medium irrigation project in Madhya Pradesh that aims to enhance water supply for both local residents and wildlife, particularly benefiting the gharial population.
Assessing Defence and Strategic Needs
The Standing Committee also scrutinized 17 defence-related proposals, largely concentrated in the Union Territory of Ladakh and the State of Sikkim. These proposals, essential to national security, focus on developing strategic infrastructure in border and high-altitude regions. The committee emphasized the importance of adhering to wildlife protection measures and environmental safeguards in executing these projects.
Future Directions and Policy Improvements
Additionally, the committee reviewed the Action Taken Report (ATR) concerning past decisions and directives. This discussion highlighted enhancements in policy measures, particularly improvements made to the PARIVESH portal aimed at streamlining processes. The committee agreed to hold further discussions in upcoming meetings to ensure compliance with wildlife conservation policies and to oversee effective monitoring.
The Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife serves as a statutory advisory body under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, dedicated to promoting the conservation and protection of wildlife and forests. It strives to ensure that development initiatives around protected areas are executed in a sustainable and balanced manner.
