The Indian government has assured citizens that the country’s fuel supply remains stable despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, confirmed that crude oil availability is sufficient and refineries are operating at full capacity. This announcement comes as Indian vessels continue to navigate the conflict-prone Strait of Hormuz, with measures in place to ensure uninterrupted fuel distribution across the nation.
Stable Fuel Supply Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The Indian government has taken steps to reassure the public regarding the stability of the fuel supply chain. Sujata Sharma emphasized that the domestic petroleum supply is functioning smoothly, with no disruptions reported at retail fuel outlets. She stated, “Crude is available in sufficient quantity. All refineries are operating at the highest capacity.” This assurance is particularly important as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have raised concerns about potential fuel shortages. Officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas are actively monitoring stock levels and logistics to ensure that petrol and diesel distribution remains uninterrupted throughout the country.
Safe Transit of Energy Cargo
As Indian-flagged vessels continue to transit the Strait of Hormuz, the Shipping Ministry has confirmed that safety measures are in place for energy cargo. Special Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha announced that an LPG carrier, the Shivalik, is expected to dock at Mundra port shortly. Priority arrangements have been made to facilitate swift unloading, ensuring that there are no delays in the discharge of cargo. Sinha also reassured the public that all Indian seafarers in the Persian Gulf area are safe, with no incidents reported in the last 24 hours. Continuous monitoring of the situation is being conducted, with officials in touch with each vessel and its crew.
Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts
In light of the current situation, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has indicated that India is engaging with Iran to facilitate the reopening of key maritime routes. In a recent interview, he noted that diplomatic coordination is beginning to yield positive results. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of dialogue, stating, “It is better that we reason and we coordinate and we get a solution than we don’t.” While recent vessel movements indicate progress, he mentioned that passage for Indian ships is currently being managed on a case-by-case basis, highlighting the need for continued diplomatic efforts.
Future Prospects for Fuel Supply
Looking ahead, the Indian government remains committed to ensuring a stable fuel supply for its citizens. Another Indian vessel, the Jag Laadki, is safely en route to India, carrying approximately 81,000 tonnes of Murban crude oil from the UAE. This vessel is expected to arrive at Mundra Port soon, further bolstering the country’s fuel reserves. As the situation in the Middle East evolves, the government will continue to monitor developments closely and take necessary actions to maintain the stability of the fuel supply chain.
