Government Releases Over ₹2,100 Crore for Flood Relief Efforts
In a significant move to aid states ravaged by floods, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has sanctioned the early release of ₹2,117.85 crore from the Central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). This measure is part of the government’s commitment, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, to provide essential support for relief, rescue, and rehabilitation initiatives during the ongoing southwest monsoon season of 2026.
Since the arrival of the monsoon, the Indian government has been actively monitoring flood conditions in close cooperation with state authorities. The Central Government has mobilized necessary resources, including the pre-deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and logistical support from the Ministry of Defence in areas where it is needed.
Inter-Ministerial Teams Deployed for Damage Assessment
To accurately assess the devastation caused by the floods, Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) have been dispatched to affected states including Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Given the acute flood crisis in Assam, two separate team visits have been conducted. Following a request from the Government of Nagaland, an additional IMCT is being established for that state.
From the seven states impacted by flooding, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Nagaland have already received the first allocation of SDRF funds for the financial year 2026-27. To facilitate swift access to resources for relief operations, the Union Home Minister has approved the advance release of the second SDRF instalment for both Himachal Pradesh and Odisha. Furthermore, in light of the pressing need for immediate support, the advance release of the first SDRF instalment has been sanctioned for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, with certain documentary requirements being relaxed.
Financial Aid Breakdown
The financial assistance earmarked for affected states is comprehensive. Arunachal Pradesh will receive ₹44.55 crore as an advance release of the first instalment of the SDRF for the financial year 2026-27. Assam has been allocated ₹379.35 crore under the same advance release structure, while Gujarat will receive ₹500 crore. Himachal Pradesh, which had already benefited from the initial SDRF instalment, has also been granted ₹193.95 crore as part of the second instalment. Additionally, Maharashtra has been approved for ₹500 crore as the first instalment, and Odisha has received another ₹500 crore as the second instalment. This substantial allocation totals ₹2,117.85 crore, aimed at bolstering ongoing relief and response efforts in the flood-stricken regions.
