Government Partners with Spiritual Organizations for Drug-Free India
In a significant move towards creating a drug-free India, the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE) has formalized partnerships with four esteemed spiritual organizations. The Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed today at the Ministry’s Chintan Conference Hall in New Delhi, marking a collaborative effort to combat substance abuse through community outreach and awareness.
Shri Sudhansh Pant, Secretary for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Sandeep R. Rathod, Joint Secretary (Drug Prevention), along with other senior officials and representatives from the spiritual organizations, were present during the signing ceremony. The organizations involved in this initiative include Adhyatm Vigyan Satsang Kendra, Chinmaya Mission, Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan, and the Hare Krishna Movement. Shri Astik Kumar Pandey, Director (Drug Prevention) signed the agreements on behalf of the DoSJE.
Strengthening the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan
The partnerships are an essential part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA), a campaign aimed at reducing substance abuse across India. By leveraging the outreach and influence of these spiritual organizations, the Department aims to enhance awareness and mobilization efforts against drug abuse.
During the event, Secretary Pant emphasized the vital role that spiritual organizations can play in promoting a drug-free society. He praised the organizations already working with the Ministry and highlighted that their efforts have reached over 34.42 crore citizens. Pant urged the newly partnered organizations to utilize their networks to spread messages of prevention, recovery, and awareness, particularly at grassroots levels.
Building Resilience and Community Support
Pant articulated that the collaboration seeks to harness spiritual strength and community mobilization to create sustainable social movements against drug abuse. The spiritual organizations are positioned to help reduce stigma surrounding addiction, encouraging affected individuals to seek help and rehabilitation.
The Secretary noted that initiatives like these contribute significantly to public awareness, volunteer mobilization, and integrating holistic practices such as yoga and meditation into rehabilitation efforts. He envisioned these partnerships as pathways to reinforce the collective mission of achieving a Nasha Mukt Bharat and a Viksit Bharat (developed India).
A Collective Commitment to a Drug-Free Society
As part of the program, an Anti-Drug Pledge was taken by representatives of the participating organizations, who were encouraged to share this pledge at their public events to strengthen the communal commitment against drug use. The event also featured screenings of three short films that underscore the importance of awareness around substance abuse and the rehabilitation of its victims.
The Ministry’s initiatives, which include registering as Nasha Mukti Mitra and taking e-pledges on the NMBA portal, were also shared with attendees, underlining the ways the public can engage in this vital cause.
