Government Launches Subsidy Scheme to Boost Livestock Farming

The Government of India has initiated the National Livestock Mission’s Entrepreneurship Development Programme (NLM-EDP) to enhance rural poultry and livestock farming through generous financial support. This credit-linked scheme offers a substantial capital subsidy of up to 50% on project costs, capped at ₹50 lakh, and is available to a diverse range of applicants, including individual farmers, farmer producer organizations, self-help groups, and cooperative societies.
The NLM-EDP aims to foster the establishment of various livestock and animal breeding projects, including poultry, sheep, goats, pigs, camels, and even donkeys, alongside allied fodder value-addition units. The subsidy varies by project type, granting up to ₹25 lakh for poultry ventures, ₹50 lakh for sheep and goat farming, and a maximum of ₹30 lakh for pig farming, among other categories.
Financial Impact and Employment Generation
Over the past five years, the EDP has disbursed funds totaling ₹559.53 crore, funding 3,843 projects across the country. The breakdown of investment shows significant contributions to small ruminant farming, which alone accounted for ₹2240.20 crore in project costs and generated around ₹386.04 crore in approved subsidies. This initiative is expected to create direct and indirect employment for approximately 18,475 individuals, significantly impacting economic opportunities in rural areas.
While Baran District has yet to see any approved projects, neighboring Jhalawar District is set to benefit from two newly approved projects, yielding job prospects for 13 individuals in the region. The employment created not only aids entrepreneurs but also extends to associated sectors like veterinary services and feed supply chains, fostering a robust rural economy.
Empowering Rural Communities
The scheme is designed to uplift rural livelihoods by targeting self-reliance among local youth and women, who often hail from marginalized backgrounds. By providing access to viable business opportunities, the NLM-EDP aims to promote entrepreneurship and economic stability within these communities.
In addition to financial assistance, the NLM focuses on capacity building and skill development. Training programs under the initiative emphasize modern livestock management techniques, covering essential aspects such as breeding, feeding, and health management. These efforts equip farmers with the knowledge needed to adopt scientific practices in livestock rearing, thereby enhancing productivity and profitability.
This information was shared by Shri Rajeev Ranjan Singh, the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, during a recent session in the Lok Sabha, highlighting the government’s commitment to advancing the livestock sector as a means of rural development.
